For Emma, life couldn’t be better. Together with her husband, Alex, and their four-year-old son, she has the perfect family. But there is a terrible secret lurking in Emma’s past, and it’s clawing to break free: Emma is a murderer.
Nevertheless, her story, and the endearing compassion she shows for her loved ones, drew me in completely. I thought I could trust her, that she was a good person at heart—despite her admission from the first page that she killed her manipulative schoolteacher, who seduced her at the age of fifteen. Although Emma gets her revenge, Caroline Mitchell’s intricately drawn hints of suspicion made me feel that there was something hidden from view. A truth even more sinister than I thought—and one that made me doubt who the victim really was until the last page.
As a former detective who investigated violent crimes, Mitchell is no stranger to the most depraved elements of human nature—that much is clear in this Gone Girl-esque thriller. Incredibly suspenseful, with a fast-paced style that does not relent until the final word, Silent Victim vocalizes the dreaded question inside all of us: ‘what are my loved ones capable of?’

Emma’s darkest secrets are buried in the past. But the truth can’t stay hidden for long.
Emma is a loving wife, a devoted mother…and an involuntary killer. For years she’s been hiding the dead body of the teacher who seduced her as a teen.
It’s a secret that might have stayed buried if only her life had been less perfect. A promotion for Emma’s husband, Alex, means they can finally move to a bigger home with their young son. But with a buyer lined up for their old house, Emma can’t leave without destroying every last trace of her final revenge…
Returning to the shallow grave in the garden, she finds it empty. The body is gone.
Panicked, Emma confesses to her husband. But this is only the beginning. Soon, Alex will discover things about her he’ll wish he’d learned sooner. And others he’ll long to forget.

‘Silent Victim’ is thrilling, gripping and amazing. Caroline Mitchell has delivered everything you want from a thriller. I was hooked from the prologue and I did not put it down until the last swipe as it totally messed with my head.
As an avid reader who loves to read crime, I was astounded at how much I was shocked by this book. Just as I thought I’d worked things out, a twist would come out of nowhere and as the story unfolded I really couldn’t make my mind up as to who was telling the truth.
The prologue is one of the best suspense ones I’ve read - Mitchell really plays with your mind in ‘Silent Victim’ thats the beauty (if you can call it that) of this book... you don’t know what or who to believe.
The story is told through three main characters Alex, Emma and Luke and when you first start reading it you need to concentrate as you move between characters and jump to different time periods/years... however the talented Caroline Mitchell has set all chapters out clearly so it isn’t confusing.
The story contains short chapters and is so cleverly written, it’s easy to read. It had everything that makes a perfect mystery and is one the best Kindle First’s I have ordered. I would highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.
I enjoyed this book and I was keen to read until the end to see WHO was actually telling the truth in the story. But, I have to say that it got a bit too convoluted for my tastes and I ended up getting a bit bored. The author has made it very hard to know who is telling the truth, right until the very last minute, but by building up so much confusion about who is sane and who is lying, it became dull. Having said that, Luke is an incredibly creepy guy when you read his story you really do feel like the author has nailed it. I also got a bit frustrated with teenage Emma, not for being a victim but for flipping her lid so completely, although I appreciate that this is the point that the author is trying to make. A good read that you will think about afterwards, but maybe some of the less relevant bits could be taken out...
Told from the perspective of the 3 main characters in different time frames. Luke the teacher is a sexual predator who grooms young female students who are friendless without family support. He is a sociopath and his attitude sickened me. Emma is the student he deliberately seduces and then dumps. As an adult she thinks she has done a terrible thing. She has many psychological problems including bulimia. Her husband Alex doesn't know what to believe as her behavior is escalating out of control. He doesn't have our benefit of knowing what a total creep Luke is. The story built up the tension and it was hard to know whether all the things happening to Emma were real or imagined. The ending was perhaps a little over the top.
This book had 47 reviews on Amazon giving it a 4.5 star rating and I can't see it making 3 even though it is well written and I'm 1/2 way into it and probably wont finish it- for me it's a very slow story that we've heard before and it goes over the same thing again and again. But don't listen to me read it! I'm just pee'd off with the Amazon Rating - to me it was misleading. As this is how I get a lot of books off Amazon I might have to make sure more people "star" rate to get a true idea.
I recently tried to read another book by this author and couldn't get into it, so I was relieved to get caught up in this story. It was a solid thriller, and I turned the pages quickly, but I did find the characters somewhat confused in their motives, particularly the villain. I enjoyed it, but it could have been better.
I really enjoyed this book. It was gripping and unpredictable. I loved the ending, it wasn't just wrapped up quickly like I find some thrillers are, it felt like this book had a proper beginning middle and end. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Wow, this book played mind games with you. Written from the perspective of 3 people, who is telling the truth? very very clever book, I loved it. All the way through I was convinced I knew who the bad guy was but Caroline kept us guessing right until the very end. Was an emotional rollercoaster that had me holding my breath at points.
I thought this book was very interesting and for the most part so well written. You find things out at the same time as the characters in the book which made the read exciting. I was constantly having to challenge the conclusions I had come to as each new piece of evidence came to light. The characters were all well developed and interesting. I thought getting a good insight into the main agonist and his thought patterns was interesting and well researched, as well as the mind set of the main character. Personally, I found the ending seemed rushed. It felt to me like a word count had been reached and they only had a small number of words left to tie everything up together. I think the ending made sense but just wasn't executed as well as the rest of the book was. Overall, a very good read
