I really need to clear up some confusion caused by other reviews on this product. I have both the Tite-Mark (i.e. the crem-de-la-crem of wheel marking gauges) and this shop fox marking gauge. To set the record straight - The marking cutter IS NOT SUPPOSED TO ROTATE. It doesn't rotate on the Tite-Mark, and it doesn't rotate on the Veritas. It's not supposed to. It is intended to slice the wood - not rotate along it like a pizza cutter. That being said, the Tite-Mark is about $80, and the Veritas is about $40. Neither are prime shipping. As others have said, the Rod & Fence on this product are great. The feel very solid & sturdy. However, there are 2 problems with this marking gauge; 1) When you mark your line, the cutter tends to roll, and loosens the screw that holds it to the rod. To fix this, use some loctite on the screw. 2) The cutter isn't sharp. To fix this, just rub it flat on your sharpening stone a few times.
Don't get me wrong... I love the Tite-mark, but you're really paying for 2 features: 1) the fine-adjustment knob, which is awesome. It makes getting a precise setting so much quicker. 2) on the tite mark, when the rod is pulled all the way back, the end of the rod sits flush with the fence. This allows you to protect the cutter (from getting dull), and do depth measurements.
I bought this shop fox when I was getting started with woodworking, and it served me well. I love my tite-mark (and most veritas tools), but this tool will achieve the exact same results as more expensive marking gauges 99.999% of the time. (scientifically verified, of course).
