Product Description

Storms at sea. Heartbreak on land.

Sally meets Dermid on a tall ship sailing across the Atlantic and is drawn to him, despite what she considers to be his unfortunate passion for bagpipes. However, their tentative romance ends because of something Sally does. She feels guilty and he feels betrayed, and they part in hurt, angry silence.

Despite what happened on the ship, Sally can’t forget Dermid, although when she takes a job on a Scottish island she claims that the fact he lives on a nearby island has nothing to do with it. Not a thing.

On the Isle of Lewis, city girl Sally runs head-on into small-town Scotland, complete with inquisitive neighbours and more things tartan than she had ever imagined existed.

When her job ends, Sally must choose between building a life with Dermid or returning to her carefree, wandering ways. Someone from Dermid’s past sparks a crisis that sends Sally fleeing back to London -- and may tear them apart forever.

And could she ever learn to love the bagpipes?

Set against the tempestuous North Atlantic and the windswept beauty of the Hebrides, ‘Ship to Shore’ is a story of two people who must learn to trust their feelings, and to trust each other.

This book was very enjoyable and very well written with wry humour throughout. Wonderfully descriptive locations and of course, a happy ending. I really liked this book and highly recommend it!

I chose to read Ship to Shore by Elizabeth Krall because I have read her work in the past and enjoyed it. This book was no different. Ms. Krall has created vibrant characters with a very compelling storyline.

Sally is a very strong independent woman that likes to live on the move. She doesn’t tend to stay in one place too long. I really liked Sally thought she has a wonderful personality that I found to be charming and fun.

Sally quickly forms friendships with her fellow shipmates. It was a lot of fun watching these relationships form and grow while they were on the ocean with the world on hold for a few weeks.

Dermid has not had the best of luck with love in the past. He has had his heart broken a few times by the wrong women. When he meets Sally they form a nice friendship to start with. You can tell they have chemistry but neither is willing to take that risk to find out if there is more while they are on the ship.

Things happen and Dermid and Sally do not leave the ship on the best of terms. They do get a chance to meet up again and oh boy those sparks are turning into flames. I loved watching their friendship form into a romantic relationship. They have plenty of obstacles in their path. My heart broke for this couple a few times along the way. They have a lot of things to overcome but what a great story to show that love, real love can overcome just about anything that is thrown in it’s way.

I have to admit to knowing next to nothing about any type of ships so I really enjoyed learning a few behind the scene details in the first half of this book.

I liked the supporting cast of characters as well. They all formed such a nice friendship while they were traveling across the ocean together. I also liked the fact that Dermid’s family is involved in helping this cute couple sort through some of their mess of problems. I always like when the family is involved in the story. It just adds a little extra special touch I think.

On the whole Ms. Krall didn’t disappointment with another very interesting, storyline that took a few twist and turns I did not except. I would certainly be open to reading more of Ms. Krall’s work in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Will this holiday romance work? 14 August 2012
By Lougrahamii - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
There is something very different when you read a book set at sea, not many of them around and I can say that this is a really good one! First part is set at sea and as the holiday romance ends we are transported to land in London and Scottish islands, here the story continues to enfold and the whole `will they or won't they?'.

Strong leads in both Sally and Dermid. He is dark and mysterious and she is not quite sure of where she is going - both unsure of the next steps in life.

Being a romance book, you can expect a happy ending but you don't actually know how this book ends until you turn the final page. Often you think you know, but like a ship in the storm you are thrown off and lead in a different direction.

Very well written with humour (but not laugh out loud) elements. It was very apparent that the Author knew her settings and articulates them very well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dreamy holiday reading 19 November 2012

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

It was the type of book that I wish that I was on holidays to read.

The characters were very well realised and the setting was so breath-takingly described that I have added a whole leg to my dream UK holiday.

I would recommend this book to all of my friends.

One warning, if you dislike books about sailing, keep reading. They get off the boat about of a third of the way through.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read 17 June 2012

I absolutely love this book. Very well written and you can very much imagine the entire story and Sally and Dermid. I was only going to read a few pages and read more in the morning but I couldn't put this book down and ended up going to bed later than I had planned but that is ok since I didn't have anything important to do the next day. I recommend this book.
