Todd Downing's love affair with pulp adventure dates back to his consumption of classic radio dramas and comic books as a child in the 1970s, which broadened into a general appreciation for scifi and fantasy media of all kinds. He grew up in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, writing and drawing from a young age, his works ever-present in school literary journals and newspapers, and eventually on film. He married his high school sweetheart and moved to Seattle in the early 1990s where he began to write professionally, and worked as an artist in the videogame industry until his publishing company became a full time operation. As the co-founder and creative director of Deep7 Press, Downing was the primary author and designer of over fifty roleplaying titles, including Arrowflight, RADZ, Airship Daedalus, and the official Red Dwarf RPG. He continues to write genre fiction for stage, film, comics, audio, and adventure gaming products. Widowed to cancer in 2005, Downing remarried in 2009 and currently enjoys an empty nest in Port Orchard, Washington, with his wife, two cats, an elderly German shepherd and a flock of unruly chickens.

If you're a fan of old radio serials, then this is for you. When reading you';ll almost hear it in that tinny, 1930s "Mid-Atlantic" radio voice. It's a prequel to "Assassins of the Lost Kingdom" and doesn't have to be read before that book, as both stand alone quite nicely, but I would recommend doing so.
Knowing nothing about Todd Downing's AEGIS world, I stumbled across A SHIELD AGAINST THE DARKNESS intrigued by the premise: a crew races against time to stop Aleister Crowley from unleashing dark magic in an experimental airship designed by Thomas Edison. Airships and action and ancient evil? Sign me up! Unfortunately, Downing's prose leaves a lot to be desired, as it does little to maintain the reader's interest with bland, flat descriptions and dialogue. This is an adventure tale that felt exactly like a dry sandwich. Great ingredients, by accounts should be at least palatable, but zero flavor and almost offensively difficult to get through by the end. Got as much of it down as I could, picked through the last of it, and left the remains behind. Just goes to show that good ideas don't always mean good execution.
4.0 out of 5 starsIt’s Indiana Jones in an airship!

This is a fun pulp-style romp with evil Prussians, aerial combat, zombies and an intrepid two-gun hero who calls up an image of Harrison Ford. Not exactly literary fiction but a brisk piece of retro adventure well worth the price of the popcorn.
Just finished listening to A shield Against Darkness, when I started this book I was skeptical as it is book I normally wouldn't listen to or read. But I was pleasantly surprised.🙂 it was engaging, exciting and well written. It contains mysteries, magic and comedy. I would highly recommend this book. I can not wait to listen to the next one.

This book is a great introduction to the crew, a group that met in the war and are still aching for adventure. The semi-historical characters add a bit of flair. I am very excited to read to whole series.
