Entertaining.

Good reading. Liked it. Seems historically correct and gives good insight in the problems of the generation. The many stereotypical facts are sometimes annoying, but it is addressed to teenagers in the first place.

A Great Book on the Irish Immigrant Experience
Reviewed in the United States on 25 July 2015Verified Purchase
I am the coordinator of Irish Cultural/Educational programs at an Irish Center in The Capitol of New York State. I had a special interest in reading Shanty Gold since the author Jeanne Charters is presenting her book at our September 23rd 2015 meeting. I was not disappointed since the book is a great story about the experiences of many of our Irish relatives who came to the United States at the height of the Irish Famine 1845 to 1855, the coffin ships many found transport in, the rape and slaughter they faced, and finally the perseverance needed to survive in Boston Massachusetts where no Irish need to apply for jobs. The central characters Mary Boland and Kamua Okafor a black boy had similar horrendous experiences from a society with rampant prejudices. The book achieved its purpose better in many ways of getting you in touch with the Irish experience compared to a lecture covering the same topics. I look forward to the two books which are to follow completing this trilogy of Irish immigrant pain, strength and success. Books like this prove that historic fiction can be one of the many avenues to enjoy the culture and history of people.

A Masterful Creation of pace, character and first-person impact
Reviewed in the United States on 31 January 2021Verified Purchase
This captivating, masterful creation of so well-informed historical fiction is a gut-wrenching first-person account and celebration of the incredible fortitude, strength and perseverance of one young Irish woman in overcoming the devastation of Ireland's potato famine and the pervasive cruelties of elitism, racism, and chauvinism of the Irish Migration of the 1840's-50's. Likely to bring tears to the eye!!

She knows how to develop a story with the best of them
Reviewed in the United States on 14 May 2018Verified Purchase
Being a guy (my wife's account) of English/Welsh ancestry, and knowing the English were going to be bashed, I decided to buy the book after hearing Jeanne give a talk about the book and tips on writing. She knows how to develop a story with the best of them. It is an outstanding historically accurate novel. But she also sneaks in some lessons of life. This would be a great gift for any young female who could use an inspirational role model. It is also a great read for an old guy like me who rarely reads fiction.

A very well written and engaging story!
Reviewed in the United States on 18 June 2018Verified Purchase
The book so well describes the plight of the Irish during the Potato Famine, a time of escape from the old sod. The many themes of life and death struggle have deep roots for the Irish and so many others of differing cultures but common struggles from 1850 through the turn of the Century. I can't wait for the next stories!
