The characters are engaging, I found Lorran a strong minded lass and liked her interactions with Kei, and her refusal to bow down and do as he says. I thought it a touch unlikely that the king would be able to disappear so totally, and the appearance of the baddie struck me as a bit late in the overall scheme of things (he arrives in Chapter 8, at 70% on my Kindle), but, appear he did, and he was indeed not very nice, but in a very believable way - not in a wahahahaha, twirling moustache sort of way that some baddies can be!
As well as the sex, there's a lot of "MINE" going on - from both Kei the man, and Nekane his inner dragon, and after a while I got a bit "Yeah, yeah, we know, she's yours, can we move on please?" about it all.
So, not bad, but be prepared for endless, breathless descriptions of carnal activity. Will I get the sequels? No I don't think so - I don't mind books with sex as a component, but it dominates here, to the detriment of what isn't a bad storyline, and from the brief tasters I've found of the sequels, they'll probably be the same.
King Kei wakes up and finds out he is going to turn into a dragon. He is horrified and plans to suicide - after he's set up his younger brother to take over the kingdom. Lorran talks him into staying while she studies the transition. He doesn't fight very hard because of his overwhelming obsession with Lorran. Then he starts hearing another voice in his head saying 'Mine!' every time he looks at Lorran. He fears he might hurt Lorran so he blows her off and goes back to the castle.
Avoiding spoilers, Lorran is threatened, he turns into a dragon to save her and then flies away. His brother feels he must slay the dragon but Lorran thinks she might have the solution...
There's a lot of Energizer bunny sex but it has an interesting plot, good characters and cute dialog. And the Epilogue [20+ years later] is hysterical! Warning the heroine has [oral] sex with the hero in dragon form - if that bugs you stay away from these four.
Shadow of the Dragon
1. Dragon's Kiss (2004)
2. Dragon's Fire (2005)
3. Dragon's Rise (2005)
4. Dragon's Prey (2009)
I also didn't enjoy the erotic nature of the book. IMHO, explicit sex does not equal erotica. It's necessary for erotica but not sufficient. Where was the passion? Where was the heat? This was just page after page (after page after page) of boring boinking bunnies. There were only one or two scenes where the author achieved some actual heat and passion. They weren't all boring, just most of them.
I think this author has some great ideas and a nice style. She just needs to work on the character development and adding depth to the passion. Sometimes less is more. Fewer explicit scenes but each of them with some real passion would be better, IMHO.
Is Lorran a princess by birth? That was hinted at but never confirmed. All we knew is she and her parents were estranged.
I love that Kei and Nekane fell in love with her and she loved both of them individually, two personalities sharing one body, and togeter as one.
The language from the book was very erotic and the sex scenes were nicely played. Who would have thought that dragons had such sexual appetites? Only in the world of writing and fantasy....I loved it! Nekane only wanted one mate and it was evident that it was Lorran from the beginning...No one else would do! Kei tried to fight it until Nekane showed him that Lorran was the one.
I'm looking forward to reading the stories about their children.
