Ich stieß zufällig auf Chesbro, und seine Mongo-Serie klang sehr vielversprechend: Ein kleinwüchsiger Privatdetektiv, vormaliger Zirkusstar, nunmehr promovierter Kriminologe und Schwarzgurtträger im Karate. Skurriler kommt es kaum. Erstaunlich nur, dass der Autor nicht mehr daraus macht. Die Geschichte kommt sehr konventionell daher, der auf schillernd angelegte Icherzähler bleibt erstaunlich farblos. Auch der Plot (erstmals 1977 erschienen) wirkt angestaubt. Die Russen sind noch wirklich böse, böse, die Vermengung von Elementen von Krimi und SF hatte man auch zeitgenössisch schon origineller gesehen. Insgesamt unterhaltsame Krimilektüre, die aber für mich von Kultstatus weit entfernt ist.

My book group read Shadow of a Broken Man last month and it was a terrific nostalgia read, with plenty of cold war intrigue and parapsychology and free of cell phones and the internets! The protagonist is a dwarf detective with a PhD in criminology and a black belt in karate. Chesbro’s Bob “Mongo” Frederickson is one of the most unusual outsider detectives around.
