Mikey Robins really knows his food, and as a big guy who went to a lot of trouble to slim down, this book shows his respect for his subject. It’s basically a lot of very entertaining stories about food through the ages loosely grouped under the headings of Pride, Envy, Sloth etc. For example, Nell Gwynn was so jealous of a rival for the King’s affections, she dosed the poor woman with laxatives that did their work in the King’s bed, resulting in disgrace. The 4th Earl of Sandwich really did invent the sandwich, but because he was a workaholic, not because he couldn’t bear to leave the gambling table. Rudolph Valentino was exceptionally uncouth in his eating habits. And so on. It’s quite fascinating, and of course, funny. Would you believe that pineapples were once worth about $10,000 each in today’s money?

This is the most entertaining book you are ever going to read about food. It is packed with the most amusing anecdotes about food and its uses (see the section on “sploshing”). Not only is it very amusing but it’s chatty and informative style make it very easy to read. Think of Bill Bryson meets the compares on “Iron Chef” and you have the idea.
