I seriously tried to read this novel. There were sentences in it that were wonderful...but. The book is dense, crammed with philosophic statements,
inner thoughts that grow tiresome. Little sketches to illustrate the many thoughts, attitudes, emotions etc. I couldn't get beyond these, couldn't get attached to a story. You need a good story to carry this much melancholy.

The reader would be excused for thinking that a happy outcome in any conventional sense would be impossibleReviewed in the United States on 11 November 2016
Hypnotically detailed interweaving of two damaged and anxious psyches. The reader would be excused for thinking that a happy outcome in any conventional sense would be impossible, as they blunder from misunderstanding to misadventure, but - despite, or maybe because of their inadequacies - you cannot help rooting for their ultimate salvation. Tortuous, of course, as the frustrations mount; but ultimately fulfilling.

Couldn't finish itReviewed in the United States on 10 February 2017
Couldn't finish the book, it just doesn't bring the reader into the story. It was like work to get to the third chapter where I gave up.

and it was probably my favorite of the semesterReviewed in the United States on 26 June 2017
The intro is a little rocky, but once you really get into the story it is interesting. Read it for a class, and it was probably my favorite of the semester.
Why was it praised?Reviewed in the United States on 16 March 2017
I will never read A.L. Kennedy again. The book was overlong and filled with unnecessary profanities that did nothing for the story.
