This book addresses the issue of the "dialectic of enlightenment". This is a philosophical problem which many philosophers, including Marx, have tried to tackle. Modernity brings material progress and conveniences, but at the cost of environment, community, ethics and a wholesome life. So the problem is, how do we retain the best of what is in modernity without sacrificing some of the goodness of our pre-modern past. The author, I think, believes that India, since it has always retained something of its traditions, is best located to tackle the dialectic of enlightenment. The author, who is a technologist and economist, goes into intricate details and models as to how this balancing can be achieved at the individual and at a societal/economy level. He suggests small scale solutions to local problems and scaling up 'virtuous cycles".
This is a thought provoking book. The idiosyncratic style of the book can put off an impatient reader. However for the persistent reader, it offers many rewards.

The book ‘Serenity of Thoughts’, is a journey taken by an eclectic and diverse set of imaginary people who seek to make sense of the world today, aiming to project a new direction for us all by traversing time and space, revisiting times of human excellence and development of thought systems. This is a work of non-fiction using elements of fantasy, written in an anecdotal style and further analysing the deeper issues of sustainability. The book looks into the possibilities of lifestyle pattern and consumption pattern changes from material and energy rich lifestyles to lifestyles where consumption of wellness, education, entertainment and media can be sought. This can lead to changes in economic activities, employment, and skill requirements, and further lead to excellence for creating high culture living. The humans as ‘Energy Beings’ concept is introduced and explored, enunciating that the maximization of human energy should result in agility of the mind, better health and a pursuit of life of purpose, aligned with passion and capabilities so as to result in human exuberance and excellence, and the adoption of lifestyle patterns of low material and energy consumption. Human activities have changed human behaviour through the ages, and further change is possible provided we have the mind for it. When Indians, living a thousand parallel lives, can live side by side in harmony, it is a matter of pursuit of one’s purpose of life that can change one’s life style. The latter chapters are a high-level economic analysis, a virtuous cycle framework for change, and images of change paths. Changes in the aspirational nature of the young generations and their behaviour patterns from asset owning to seeking multiplicity of experiences through sharing and flow creation is noted. Do we have the right ingredients for change preserving our nature and life with beauty and fun? This question needs answers. The book thus is a journey to find answers for us to steer a path of true modernity preserving our nature and life with beauty and fun.

The book presents some interesting ideas to address transnational problems. Writing style is mixed with some engaging portions and others that are more theoretical.

This work is a great compilation of a multitude of experiences and views of the author about the world. It is written in anecdotal style for younger readers to stay connected to the topics closely.
Views expressed in this work comes out even more relevant given the recent developments in connection to global health crisis and possibly more to come in near future.
Author takes us through time travel from ancient ages across various cultures around the globe; the past, the present and the future touching impressive level of thought provoking details. He has also compiled a rich set of data across various aspects of human development towards the latter half of the work.
I would highly recommend this book to others exploring intersections of philosophy, human development, and sustainable happiness.
