This is a pretty good book for those who wish to plan for a low conflict separation in the best interests of the children. I was already of that mind and found that this book helped to reinforce my intentions,

My only criticism is that it assumes that most marriage breakdowns are from couples who have got a bit carried away with their emotions and that with a bit of calming down, they could just rethink whether separation is the right thing to do at all. I'm sure this is the case for some separations but it would not be right for all and I think the writer needed to acknowledge this particularly in the case of domestic violence or a very toxic dynamic.

The other thing that it assumes is that all children have a good relationship with both parents and that parents selfishly force them to choose or deliberately cut off access. Every single quotation from children in the book reflected this assumption. Again, this is true in many marriage breakdowns, however I would have liked to see some thoughts about situations where the children do not wish to see one parent for their own reasons, even when neither parent is being obstructive, requiring loyalty or making negative comments. In that situation, I have found going to see a mediator much more helpful as they were able to help me distinguish what was in the child's best interest and where I needed to support the child as opposed to standing back and trying not to encourage the child's negative feelings..

This book is also not suitable for any situation with domestic violence.

Otherwise though a pretty good book with much needed sensible, calm words for a situation that is very emotive and difficult.
