A very human interest read of the lives of those caught in the Vietnam war in its early days but also a story about love family and loss

A beautiful book about a catastrophic timeReviewed in the United States on 22 April 2016
Historical fiction and mythology grow in the same orchard and their fruits nurture us in the same way; both try to bring us closer to the source of our being, the source we can no longer touch but only understand through stories. Right from the first page, this novel declares its affinities to myth and storytelling in the quest for the deepest truths. While the prose is elegant and even elegiac it's also blunt and honest. Portland Jones tells a story of human beings facing the catastrophic pain that humans inflict on one another and her kindness to her characters makes it possible for those with the memories of the war to remember and be unafraid, and for those who live the war only in the stories and history she reminds them that all memories are part of our history. We need to tell the stories. Thank you for a beautiful book.
