This first book in the 'Dashing Widows' series is possibly the weakest but it's still an excellent read.
Lady Caroline is dominated by her father then her husband. Now a widow she is determined to enjoy her freedom, and seeks her first lover. She asks for advice from her BFF Lord Silas Stone, but he tells Caroline why she should reject her candidates. Secretly frustrated, Silas adores Caroline but his subtle wooing has put him in the friend zone. And while Caroline only wants a brief fling, something about being with Silas tugs at her deepest emotions.
I liked the emotional believability of this book. Caroline is over-controlled by the men in her life, surely a common occurance during that time. Her inner turmoil is very real as are Silas' tender feelings. I also enjoyed the wit and humour. Keep an eye out for the greenhouse seduction scene, both erotic and funny.
In the background the author sets up the secondary characters for their own stories in this lovely series. However this is a stand alone book that can be fully enjoyed on its own.
