I chose this wallet because all the new modern wallets (those ones made of aluminum that preach about being the last wallet you’ll ever need) force you to sacrifice too many features you are use too. For one I don’t mind having a money clip but not if it’s my only option for storing money. It just seems too risky and easy to lose your money that way. It also kinda tells the world how much money you have and whether or not it’s a good idea to rob you right now. Secondly, all those minimalist aluminum wallets just want you to stack all your credit cards, business cards, and rewards cards in a pile and expect you to believe that’s organized. Absolutely not. Lastly, where they fail to meet the minimum requirements of a traditional wallet, they try to make up by giving you survival tools....
JUST STORE MY MONEY!!!
And that’s what this wallet does, It looks elegant, nice touch of red, Doesn’t scream Guess, and gets the job done right. And this is coming from someone who fights traditional things, but when it comes to a wallet, for now, traditional is best.
Opening the package reveals the nice scent of a genuine leather wallet. Mine is the black with red stripe. Initial examination shows no loose threads or other signs of improper manufacturing. As you can see in the product images, there is space for a credit card and driver's license the left side and space for three credit card sized items on the right. Comparing to my regular wallet, the Guess wallet opens to the same width which is fine since the size of money hasn't changed over the years. However, the height has shrunk from 4-1/2 inches to 3-1/2 inches. This impacts how much stuff you can carry in a way that is not evident at first glance.
For instance, the height of a standard billfold wallet allows for space to store larger items behind credit-card pockets. This Guess wallet will fit maybe two extra credit cards behind the license panels, but larger items will not fit. This means my oversize car insurance card and laminated health insurance card have nowhere to fit. You will need to make sure nothing you have is larger than a credit card before you buy. The fit behind the credit card panels is also very snug.
Finally, there is not enough space in the plastic window so my state driver's license, also the size of a credit card will fit so all necessary information. In my case, information like my name and driver's license number are obscured by the strip of leather at the top. Because of this you will almost certainly need to remove your license every time you want to show it to someone. It makes the wallet seem like it was designed improperly, to be honest.
Personally, I will pass on this for a regular-sized bi-fold wallet. You may be able to fit this wallet in your pocket easier, but that's the only advantage I can see in buying this. It's okay for someone who just needs a billfold and a couple of cards, but it doesn't have the flexibility needed to handle larger items.
I do not like name branding, especially in this case since it's standing out in red. Especially because I've heard of Guess, but assume it's a woman's brand or else for Preppy's, as I have never owned anything by them. Anyway, I'm also not sure what I think of RFID blocking wallets. Frankly, two of my cards need to open doors, and I'd much rather get into where I'm going without removing the cards. I'm also not certain that I really believe this is truly full RFID-blocking, nor am I convinced you need that with credit cards now having chips in them. But who knows.
Overall a nice wallet with two questionable gimmicks (but that's not actually too bad, as I've been wallet shopping recently).
Now for the packaging, it was a hit and a miss. The top of the box is designer, with the Guess branding in leather. My husband loved this. However, the bottom of the box is nothing but cheap cardboard. Say what? Why not make the entire box the same material all around? If the entire box was made of the top designer material, this box would be ideal to keep wallet stored in it when not in use, or as a nice trinket box for small jewelry, cuff links and the like.
