A little silly and plodding at times. Made me want to shake the heroine and say just get to the. Story but I did finish it which says I found it interesting enough to keep going.

4.0 out of 5 stars An intruguing plot, a lovely turn of phrase 25 August 2015

I was drawn to this book by the beautiful cover but kept reading because the story engrossed me right up until the last chapter. It's not faultless but it's certainly good fun and maintains your attention until the bitter end.

The story centres on the death of a lonely old lady in a Sydney suburban street. We sense almost immediately that this woman had plenty to hide, and, despite her age, her death is certainly suspicious and it doesn't take long for a cast of likely suspects to emerge. There was one particular suspect that had me most intrigued and I think Amos played with us a little there. Is this person a red herring? Are they more devious than we realise? I love all that!

While I would have loved more interaction with the title character of the series, Jill Brennan who remains fairly elusive at the end, Amos is clearly a good writer with a lovely turn of phrase and I look forward to reading the next book in the series and getting to know Jill better.

A worthwhile purchase.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good Start to New Series 27 April 2015

Interesting concept and unique characters bring life to the first book in a new DC Brennan crime series. Dr. Ashleigh Taylor is a forensic pathologist who determines what Senior Constable Brennan believes is a suicide, is actually the murder of an elderly woman in her home. Her death changed the life of her wealthy son, especially when someone now seemed to be after him. Twists and turns keep the story moving forward to the surprise ending. We are looking forward to the next DC Jill Brennan episode.
