I have been a fan of Lori Wilde for several years ever since her Bachelors of Bear Creek Series, though her last several books (including this one) have left me cold.
This book tells the story of a plastic surgery resident, Vanessa, who has a mysterious past which leads her to focus on work and stay away from personal relationships. Tanner is hired to keep an eye on Vanessa, but to stay incognito, he is hired as head of security at the private hospital where she works. The hospital is having some strange occurences that play into the plot. Various twists and turns happen until the somewhat predictable end. Since this is part of a series, the door is left open for the next book.
The 2 characters are already in bed after the first 30 or so pages, so there is not really a steamy build up that Ms. Wilde used to do so well in earlier books. The conflicts also don't keep Vanessa and Tanner apart until toward the end (and that only lasted 4 or 5 pages). The charaters act counter to what the author leads you to believe in their backstory. The book appears to have been written around the love scenes instead of using the scenes to enhance the plot. I will think twice before I pick up another of Ms. Wilde's books and will reread the old ones when I need a good romance fix.
