Product Description

When 12-year-old Angus Wolfe discovers a cache of documents near the site of an old swing bridge in Washago, Ontario, he becomes entangled in a mystery dating back to World War II. Are the papers connected to an escape of Nazi prisoners-of-war from a nearby camp in 1943? With help from his friend, Amanda, and some colourful local characters, Angus draws on his considerable resourcefulness and intellect to unearth answers to questions that have remained buried for generations. However, the deeper Angus digs, the closer he may come to destroying a precious family relationship.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Young Hero and An Appealing Cast of Supporting Characters 2 November 2014

This is a tricky mystery, wrapped in a multi-generational tale, seasoned with a wide range of engaging and personable characters. For the right reader this could become a favorite book.

The plot is straightforward enough. Twelve year old Angus finds some old documents, from around the 1940's he thinks, in a leather satchel that had been hidden in the trunk of a recently felled tree. They appear to be in Russian. What are they and how the heck did they up being hidden way back then? This is our mystery. If that were all, well, this would probably still be an O.K. book, in a conventional sort of way. But this book actually offers a great deal more.

Angus lives in Washago, Ontario. In the 1940's the main highway ran right through town and Washago was a hopping place. When a modern freeway was built it bypassed Washago, and now that "main drag" is a lightly used and almost abandoned highway. Washago has been bypassed as well and is just an aging shadow of its former self. It remains populated, however, by a lot of old-timers who remember the good old days. Washago has become almost a living history time capsule, and it is all of that history that Angus has to navigate to solve the mystery.

And here's the best part. Angus has to track down and talk to a lot of the local oldsters, people who were kids themselves back in the 40's. These characters are exceptionally well written. They are sharp and full of appeal and personality. I don't remember a middle grade book I've read that does a better job of presenting smart, interesting, good-natured, alert and articulate senior characters. Balancing this is Angus, his younger brother, and his pal Amanda, who are confident, curious, respectful and well spoken and who interact easily and forthrightly with all of the adults. They listen, ask the right questions, and navigate the mystery with determination and spunk.

As an added bonus, there is a wealth of historical detail that is slipped in to the story without ever becoming just tedious exposition. Actually, most of it is essential to getting to the resolution of the mystery. And, appropriate given the author's heavy involvement in recording the history of Canadian steam railroading, there is a fair amount of railroad background that also figures into the story.

So, you get a good mystery, solid characters, a bit of small town atmosphere, some World War II home front memories and a twisty, surprising and action packed wow finish. I considered this a very nice find. (Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to the publisher of this book.)
5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book! 29 July 2014

I love a good story! This is one of those books that intrigues you from the very first page. It is a well-written mystery/adventure story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading! Considering that it's called 'An Angus Wolfe Adventure' I am going to assume there will be more to come, and if so, I can't wait for the next one. This author has great descriptive talent making me feel as though I am right there with young Angus and Amanda. And even though Angus is young, this story doesn't necessarily read like a young person's book. I am 50+ and loved it! Most importantly, I can usually figure out the 'mystery' early on in a book, but not this one! I was totally surprised at the great ending. I've been known to try to throw books with bad ending overboard off a cruise ship (No, I've never actually littered the ocean, but I've wanted to many times!) but this little jewel had a pleasantly surprising ending. Good stuff!

I thought that I might have seen, ahead of time, the end that was coming, but I didn't. It was interesting, and entertaining, to read about the mystery being solved. The ending was a very clever surprise !! Well done !!
