The gothic undertones made 'The Secret Heiress' an entertaining, atmospheric saga of greed, deceptions and twists.
The book is set on a fictional rural property, Summersby House, in the real town of Castlemaine, Victoria. The spit time period falls between the late 1800s and early 1900s when Castlemaine is still riding on the wave of being a gold rush boomtown and then an important business/farming community.
Australian author Luke Devenish writes an interesting plot (if a little crowded at times, with long chapters) and injects a feeling of foreboding from the beginning. His main characters/narrators are servants, Ida, the older and Biddy, the younger - both well-developed and colourful types. The beautiful house is also a central character and DevenishIt describes it in vivid detail as well as making it part of the storyline. In the mix are a range of characters from different social backgrounds, with various motivations and diverse personality traits.
Although it's not an impactful narrative, TSH is an engaging and worthwhile read that I enjoyed very much.
