Product description

Product Description

They were pathetic bundles of fur when R.D. Lawrence pulled them from the gory sack stowed in a Cree Indian’s canoe. Wrapped in their dead mother’s hide, the two wolf pups were soaked in water and blood, barely ten inches long, and quite blind. Striking a bargain on the spot, Lawrence paid the Indian twenty-five dollars and a canoe paddle for the male and female cubs, whom he dubbed Matta and Wa (after Ontario’s Mattawa River, from which they had been rescued). Thus began an amazing adventure for Lawrence, his wife Joan, and the malamute dog Tundra in raising and caring for animals that Lawrence vowed would someday return to their wilderness habitat. Keeping the wolves a secret from neighbours in an area where wolves are trapped and hunted and establishing a position as “alpha male” (or leader) of the “pack,” were just some of the problems Lawrence faced. An experienced naturalist, Lawrence observed much about wolf behaviour never before documented and in the heart-warming account shares with us his love and fascination for these remarkable creatures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true tale of wildness and compassion. Lawrence and ... 15 December 2014

Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
A true tale of wildness and compassion. Lawrence and his wife raised orphan wolf Cubs and successfully returned them to the wild. This is usually not possible once canines have bonded with humans, but living in the wilderness edge as they did, they could teach them to hunt and live on there own right where they lived. R.D. Lawrence worked as a lumberman, maple syrup maker, and a trapper for a little while. He was more suited to rescuing and rehabbing wildlife than killing it, especially the predators. He also wrote about befriending a cougar and rehabbing orphan beavers. He writes well about all the other plants, animals and seasons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading for someone who loves nature stories 22 February 2015

I just finished reading this book and have to admit that I really like R.D. Lawrence's writing style. I read one of his other books... The North Runner, and was totally engrossed in the story and really appreciated the detail of which he was able to convey to the reader. I would highly recommend either of these books to someone who has a love for nature and enjoys reading about real life living experiences out in the wilderness. R D Lawrence has a great ability to pull in the reader and keep the reader wanting to read on. I definitely will look for more books by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like animals? R.D. Lawrence's books are for you! 7 November 2015

I love nature stories and R. D. Lawrence is a Master Writer. He obviously deserves the acclaim he has received as a Biologist, Conservationist, and Naturalist - to which you could easily add "Humorist." He taught me that animals can be as funny as people! Get set to enjoy a wonderful reading experience. I have bought several of his books and am looking for others.. I ran across my first,"Cry Wild", as a RD Condensed book- which started my search. My only regret is that he is now gone and eventually I will run out of his books!

RD Lawrence is probably dead by now but his series on animals that are either endangered or reviled shows readers how much we have in common with these animals.
