...the prettiest coloring book of the season. - GirlsLife.com

...this book has multigenerational appeal. It's not just a coloring book, by any means. Some pages have space where the garden is incomplete so kids (and adults) can create a little flora and fauna of their own. - CoolMomPicks.com

Artist Johanna Basford is at the forefront of the grown up coloring trend. Her whimsical artwork just makes us want to drop all our responsibilities and color forever. - Hello Giggles

There are few art forms as meditative, nostalgic and all-around blissful as the coloring book.Consider trading in your yoga mat for a set of markers and peruse the gorgeous gardens of Basford's imagination. - Huffington Post

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
By E L Smith on 11 January 2020
The artwork itself is very beautiful, the only reason I gave any stars. I like the treasure hunt and whole concept of the book BUT: The copy I received is not as shown or described.
**Please refer to photos
"......in an inky black-and-white wonderland." NOT black ink on white paper. This whole book is made with yellow/sepia? toned paper. This paper totally changes the colour outcome for all the colour mediums I use; regular, watercolour and metallic coloured pencils, and gel pens....
The book is fully bound and not all pages lie flat so that double spread images are hard to complete. Individual pages can't easily be removed. I have another book like this and ended up removing all the bindings so I could work the pages comfortably.
I would have returned it but that is an upfront cost I can't afford so will use it as best I can.
** Photos were taken against a white sheet. The last photo shows a comparison between the Secret Garden and my "old" book Tropical Wonderland (same style different author).

I caught the colouring habit and ordered the secret garden after watching reviews on you tube, the pictures are pretty and intricate and i have spent many hours working on only a handful of pictures so far. The paper is thicker than any of my other books but i have not used pens on it yet. My front cover did arrive with a score on it - it had obviously been marked by a sharp implement when opening the package at the warehouse, it was not enough for me to return it though, I couldn't wait to get started on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice imaginative designs

It's a cool book with lots of interesting themes on the garden/nature subject. The good thing is that it involves a lot of areas where you'd use otherwise underused colours - such as browns, greys, black - for colouring tree trunks and branches, or bugs. So you won't end up with all your "floral" pencils gone and a pack of browns untouched. The less attractive side of the book is that it's quite thick and folds in the middle, so colouring closer to the middle is a bit tricky, and a lot of very small, fine and fiddly details (such as tiny leaves) which any self-respecting pencil - the kind which works ok when blunt and breaks the moment you've sharpened it - will struggle with. I am not keen on inks, I don't even know what it is, so I won't be colouring the entire book and will avoid the very small detailed designs. But that's fine.
Another thing: it's double sided, so you might need to put a piece of paper under the page you are colouring (if the previous one is already done) in order not to stain/transfer colours.
