I was apprehensive going into this sequel because I'd heard mixed things from my friends - some loved it, some were disappointed - and I, unfortunately, related to the latter. Even if I wasn't the biggest fan of this book, I think this is Maya Hughes' strongest written release so far. I feel harsh giving it a low rating since I love this author, but I don't like enemies to lovers and I wasn't into any of the characters or couples. The Fulton U series is unique in the sense of its male characters who are sweet, soft, and loyal to their love interests, and it utilises all the elements of New Adult college romance we love, but in a more admirable way to its predecessors.
The Second We Met follows Nix, the "Golden Boy" and infamous football player, and Elle, a pink-haired menace desperate to breeze through college and attain a prestigious award through a copious amount of volunteering. After an unfortunate incident where she mistakes his home for her own, Elle accidentally sees Nix naked, which initiates a tense rivalry. After one too many calls to the police, Nix is forced to repair his reputation by volunteering, resulting in more run-ins with Elle. Finally, they're forced to confront their preconceived notions of each other and look past their initial judgment.
Let's appreciate the positives first because I hate that I have any negatives in the first place. The writing was Hughes' strongest (in comparison to the others I've read) and managed to employ the conventions of romcoms that I love. There were a lot of unique, hilarious similies included throughout that added great dimension to the storytelling. Such as, "my gaze dipped low like a tractor beam had been attached to my eyes" and so forth. It was just a cute addition I loved reading throughout the novel. Moreover, it's hard not to love these characters in their large, quirky group of friends, accompanied by their games and running gags. Though, I definitely don't see the appeal of Berk and Jules together like everyone else. Maybe that's I topic I can explore later. Whenever you read about the boys in the "Brothel" - in parenthesis because I don't like uttering that phrase myself to describe them - and the girls who accompany them, you can't help but wish you had a friendship like theirs. Especially when they play the Nerf gun battles or include the ongoing gag that Marisa's cooking skills are abysmal.
Speaking of Marisa, I feel like a starving dog just begging for her book. They've been teased in three books now and were pushed back an entire year, and now I have to wait even longer while people obsess over Jules and Berk. I'm even more excited for their book knowing the additional angst surrounding the brief amount of time they dated, where Marisa decided they'd be better off as friends. I'm even disappointed Reece and Seph were pushed to the background and barely given any lines other than stating they were boyfriend and girlfriend.
The main downfall of The Second We Met for me was the way the plot progressed and the character dynamics, which are 100% personal issues and not reflective of its quality as a novel. I'm not the biggest fan of the enemies to lovers trope, especially when it fluctuates from hate to love constantly throughout the book. It's exhausting for me to even read about, so I don't know how the characters themselves withstood it. By their fourth or fifth breakup (I lost count) - particularly the one in the main complication - I was unbelievably over their oscillating moods towards each other. I'm the type of person who can't enjoy a book if I'm frustrated, so I ended up skimming the entire ending and wishing it were over. Including the brief scene my eyes breezed over with the set-up for Jules and Berk's book, which I'm not interested in reading anymore since they're basically another version of Sierra Burgess Is Not A Loser.
Another - entirely personal - reason I was disillusioned with this book was the progression of Nix's story. I've said it in every review with a straight white rich male as the main character, but I really can't feel sympathy towards them. Nix is the "Golden Boy", a beloved football player, and unbelievably rich, but most of his problems revolve around not wanting to follow his father's dream. It's kind of like a plot from a teen movie on the Disney Channel. I hate even stating that, but there's a line where Nix literally says it's his father's dream, not his.
I didn't dislike Elle in a similar sense to others who find her irritating because I understood her, but I also didn't like her. If that makes sense. She needed the award so she could pay her tuition and the only way she saw to achieve that was by volunteering. It's entirely understandable. However, the way she was constantly berating Nix for absolutely nothing and then getting upset when he wouldn't answer her calls after she broke up with him was infuriating. The third act break up was my main reason for skimming the end of the book.
Consequently, I think The Second We Met was a good book, just not one for me to appreciate since I wasn't a fan of any of the couples/characters. I'm still holding out hope for Marisa and LJ's book, however, which looks like it'll be a long wait.

Loved this book about Nix and Elle . He's the star QB she's the girl across the road with a big hate for footballers or popular guys in general cause she was burned by them more than once. These 2 never a dull moment. The bantering between the is hilarious. I loved seeing the boys and girls from the perfect first . I love the relationship between the guys they're like brothers and I loved their nerf fights. Now these 2 have alot to overcome she needs to see past his footballer status cause Nix is a great man who was trying to get closer to his dad and football was his way till he realized that it's not his dream. She has a lot of trust issues will she be able to trust him so that they can find their happy ending or is it just a dead end for these two?

I couldn't wait to get my hands on the second book in the Fulton U series and I loved every single word. Maya is my go-to author when it comes to romance books that are NA, but also sports related. I think she has definitely found her niche.
The only down side for me in Nix and Elle's story was that it seemed to take forever for them to go from enemies to lovers. But as the book went on my frustration was was tamped down because their relationship had to go through different phases for them to be not only great individuals but also a wonderful couple.

The Second we Met is a enemies to lovers story and book 2 in the Fulton U series and can be read as a standalone which is what I have done; but now I might just have to keep reading because I am hooked.
Elle has her eye on the prize and she will not be distracted by the partying ways of the hot Jock from across the road, when her latest complaint put him in the firing line, she never thought she would have to spend time with him. Granted Nix puts in the work and they become closer, both holding onto secrets that could break them, their relationship can either make or break them.
Having read Hughes before I knew that this book would be jam packed with drama and emotion. There were times when I wanted to shake both of them and tell them to pull their heads in but in the end it all evened out and they got to a place where they were working on their own dreams.
I cannot wait to read book 3, the minor characters throughout this book are a great addition.

Spoken in: Dual POV
The Second We Met is the second standalone novel in Maya Hughes Fulton U series. It can be read alone but I would definitely recommend reading The Perfect First before jumping into this book.
Nix and Elle are neighbours and because of the way they met and also with Nix being the quarterback of the football team Elle automatically thinks he's a cocky arrogant jerk and wants nothing to do with him. It isn't until a year and a half later when they get stuck together for volunteer work over spring break that Elle sees Nix as more than a QB and they call a truce.
I honestly loved these two together so much. Once they become more than enemies they couldn't deny the intense chemistry they had it brings so many hot scenes and so much swoon. It wasn't always easy and they had along way to go but I loved watching the growth of these two.
So many laugh out loud moments with all the side characters they all had such an amazing friendship and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. I need more!

This was such a great enemies to lovers romance! It’s one of my favourite tropes, all the angst, backwards and forwards, sarcasm and banter. I live for it!
Elle and Nix’s story had all of the above!
I have to admit that Elle did annoy me at times, she was a little too judgemental but she has been hurt before so I can kind of understand where it comes from.
Let’s talk about Nix! Where can I find me one of him?! I kinda adored everything about him *swoon!
I thoroughly enjoyed this read and I’m super excited for Berks and Jules story, bring it on!!

Elle hates everything about the house opposite and especially Phoenix, Nix to his friends. She is struggling to keep up with the demanding schedule she has and after calling the police on a party at Nix house they end up together on a charity project. What starts as hate turns to compulsion and finally to love. The chemistry between them is hot enough to cause burns. This was a read I struggled to put down and I was utterly captivated by each character. Definitely a writer I'll one click on

I think there's not enough space in this website to describe all the feelings Elle and Nix got out of me. After The Perfect First, I would thought it was not possible for me to love a couple in this series even more, but Elle & Nix completely made me see how wrong I was.
First of all, I love the whole enemies to lovers thing. I think Maya did SO good with the trope, she avoided any unnecessary drama and made it Elle so loyal to her own personality. I feel like Elle was Elle from the very beginning and never, EVER, went with the whole "I'm right he's wrong" thing, because that's not who she is. I just love how real and down to earth she was, and how she always came forward when she realized she was in the wrong side of things. Elle is so smart, so caring, so good, she has a heart of gold, and honestly, I think it's impossible to end this book not loving her with every single bone in your body. She's amazing.
Nix is not very far from it. He is such an awesome guy, I would LOVE to be friends with him in real life. From the start, I think the whole "rich spoiled jackass athlete" thing made it so easy to see through him and realize how everyone looked at him and though he was JUST that, when he really wasn't. There's so much of him to see, and Maya really did amazing in showing all his layers and how complex he was.
I think most of the plot twists in this surprised me a lot, and at some point I was scared I was gonna run out of tears, because there was sad over sad over sad, I couldn't stop reading because all I wanted was that single moment where they would get their HEA.
After all, this book just surprised me a lot. I was already expecting so much of it, but Maya Hughes surprised the hell out of me and just blew out my expectations out of proportions. I didn't think it was even possible, but I might say it just became one of my favorite romance books of all times.

Elle hates liars and cheats. Nix hasn’t been completely honest with her. Hmmm…

I have waited for this book just b/c of the blurb! After seeing Nix nude, how would Elle react? Not so well apparently. Elle has been feuding with Nix from that day. She’s strung out b/c she has so many obligations, monetary and otherwise. I would like to have known a little more about how she came down from upper-middle class (formerly drove an S-Class Mercedes in HS) to borderline destitute.
Phoenix Russo, seemingly cocky football quarterback and in the words of Elle, “kind of gorgeous that made you wonder if he weren’t real-life CGI.” What Elle doesn’t know is that Nix has his demons too. When Elle and Nix end up on the same project, things begin to change. WOW! Just WOW. Love the metamorphosis.
Ms. Hughes can write some of the sweetest steamy scenes ever written. There is humor, angst and tear-inducing moments, all of which finishes with a beautiful HEA. I have bookmarked so many scenes in this book it looks like a rainbow ;-)
I volunteered to review an ARC and it comes highly recommended. This one gets 10 Stars! I want to see the movie. I CAN’T wait for Berk and Jules’ story!!!

It’s anything but love at first sight between Elle and Nix. Hate at first sight would be more accurate. He may be the big man on campus, but Elle has no problem calling the cops when one of Nix's parties gets out of hand. Now Nix needs to clean up his image and do some volunteering in the community. Can you guess who his boss is? Yep, it's Elle. But as they work together, they both begin to see they might have misjudged each other, and that’s when things get interesting.
The tension between these two is delightfully delicious, their banter wildly entertaining, and their chemistry is explosive. If I know ahead of time a book is new adult I often pass on it, fearing the characters will be annoying in their immaturity. These skillfully written characters, however, make me think I just might be missing out on some great writing. Both have far more layers and depth than seen at first glance and a vulnerability that humanizes them and endears them to the reader.
The secondary characters are equally entertaining and unique, with a smooth, moving pace to the story so that this one practically reads itself and has me eager for more from this Fulton U bunch I’ve grown attached to. If you like a story that makes you laugh, takes your emotions on a wild ride and has you believing in happily ever afters, you'll love Nix and Elle's story!
