Product description

Product Description

John Eldridge was a member of the Vancouver Police Department for twenty-six years. He followed that with an eleven-year second career at WorkSafeBC (the Workers’ Compensation Board of British Columbia) where he led a team investigating fatal accidents in the workplace. He wrote this book as a guide for law enforcement officers looking for a second career. Through his job search and transition into a career after policing, John realized the lack of second career information available specifically for police officers. Second Careers for Street Cops is his down-to-earth, practical advice for street cops who want to move on to a new work life after their law enforcement careers.

Second Careers for Street Cops will show officers how to build on the best parts of their police experience, learn their strengths and weaknesses, find the right resources, and make a second career plan.

Looking at a career change? Worried about the outcome or confused about how to begin? Don't be! Second Careers for Street Cops has the answers you need.

In this excellent book, the author describes a comprehensive, step-by-step method by which any second career seeking cop, or anyone else for that matter, can come to grips with and confidently execute a meaningful and successful career search, a task that can be more daunting, by light years, than a job search within a specific field. He draws on his own related experience, as well as the expertise of others, to provide plain language guidance that inspires self belief and personal action. Anyone looking at making a career change can benefit from the advice offered in this book.

You're not alone. Others, including the author, have lived through what you're now facing and are living proof that this method works.

Try it; you have everything to gain and nothing to lose but your self doubt.
5.0 out of 5 stars It Is Well Worth It 20 June 2015

After reading this book, I saw that it is obvious, as a manager during his second career, the author has had much experience in reviewing resumes and interviewing people seeking employment - so he knows what he is talking about. He put a lot of thought into his book as it is full of good advice, is informative, and above all it makes perfect sense. One of his tips is to analyze your acquired policing skills (as well as to build them), and he explains how surprisingly transferable these skills are to employment on "civvy street". If you are thinking about getting a good job after being in law enforcement, I recommend you read this book; it is well worth it.
