Mac Users Tip: Reformatting external HDD to Mac OS Journaled [Extended]

These drives are great, my second one. But if you are a Mac user you may have the same issue that I and others have had, in that the reformatting of the drive using Mac's Disk Utility initially failed. I thought it was a faulty drive and nearly sent it back.

The issue was that after reformatting, my iMac wouldn't recognised the drive and Time Machine also said there was not enough space on it. Yet it's a 4TB version! I have a 3TB version I bought last year and didn't have this problem when I set that up....for tech wizards out there this may be obvious, but for those of us who are a little more technically challenged, I hope this helps. I found this really helpful advice from an earlier reviewer:

"Important note if you intend to use this drive on a MAC.

The expansion drive was originally not recognised by my iMac (running macOS High Sierra) and could not be reformatted using Disk Utility either so I thought it was faulty....

However a quick call with Seagate Support revealed that my Disk Utility was set to see only seeing the disk volume - Not the complete drive.

If you have the same problem Launch Disk Utility, (located in Applications > Utilities) and use the View button (top left) to Show All Devices (not just the volumes) - The Seagate disk will then appear - From here you can Erase the disk and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with the scheme of GUID Partition Map and it will appear on your desktop. Now I've done this Time Machine is now happily backing up to the drive ;-) Great support from Seagate."

Big thanks to that reviewer. Great drive, but Seagate if you are reading this you my want to get the message out to Mac buyers about this to reduce returns.

Mauvais descriptif source d'alimentation

Bonsoir, Mauvaise expérience. A ma grande surprise la source alimentation ne correspondait pas au descriptif du produit (ci-joint photo). Par contre, ce qui a été surprennent ce sont les propos de l'employé que j'ai eu au téléphone de Dyshop. Lorsque je lui ai demandé comment faire pour avoir le rbst des frais du renvoi du disque dur, vu que le descriptif d'alimentation ne correspondait pas au produit acheté, celui-ci m'a dit, que c’était Amazon qui éditait les descriptifs sur le site, et que seul Amazon était fautif. La suite de la conversation a été encore plus surprenante, à mon grand étonnement ce M m'a dit, je cite : " je ne comprends pas pourquoi vous commandez sur Amazon, ils ne sont pas sérieux, vous feriez mieux d'acheter ce genre de produits sur des sites spécifiques". De plus, d'après lui j'aurais dû faire des comparaisions sur d'autres sites sur ce produit. L'employé de Dyshop à rajouté, qu'il était juste là pour scanner les produits commandés et faire l'envoi. J'ai demandé à ce M son nom de famille, mais bien sur il a refusé de me le donner. Enfin de compte, dans cette histoire, je suis la seule pénalisée, si Amazon est vraiment responsable du mauvais descriptif, moi part contre, j'ai dû payer 12€65 de frais de renvoi. Une chose de sure, à partir d'aujourd'hui, je me refuse de commander quoi que ce soit chez Dyshop.
Est ce que Amazon fera un geste de rbst, à suivre !. Cordialement C.Arnaud

Interne Festplatte ist eine ST4000DM005 (4TB Version)

Das Kunststoffgehäuse beherbergt intern eine handelsübliche Seagate Barracuda ST4000DM005 (4TB Version). Sehr positiv: Das USB-Gehäuse ist vorbildlich intern geschirmt: Metallfolien rund um die USB-Stecker und SATA-Anschlüsse, Schirmblech. Siehe auch Foto. Punkto EMV ist das USB-Gehäuse für ein Consumer-Gerät sehr gut aufgebaut.

Die verbaute Festplatte lässt sich nach Öffnen des USB-Gehäuses, siehe Bild von der Platte unmittelbar nach Öffenen und noch mit angebrachten EMV-Schirmklebern und seitlichen Gummipuffern an der Platte, ohne Problem vom USB3-Adapter befreien und kann dann problemlos in anderen Geräten wie einem Desktop-PC intern direkt am SATA-Port mit 6GBit/s (SATA-3) betrieben werden.

Die Platte bei mir hat problemlos alle Festplatten-SMART-Tests (short, conveyance, long) fehlerfrei bestanden, der SMART-long test dauert bei dieser Speichergröße allerdings fast 8 Stunden, das sollte beim Start beachtet werden. Die anderen SMART-Werte passen auch, also nichts zu kritisieren.

Anzumerken ist. Im Gegensatz zu den USB-Festplattengehäusen von WDC lassen sich die USB-Gehäuse von Seagate nur zerstörend öffnen (Bruch der Kunststoff-Klemmen am Gehäuserand bei Öffnung) Damit verbunden ist, klarerweise, Verlust der Gewährleistungsansprüche. Wer also glaubt unbedingt die Gewährleistung brauchen zu müssen, lässt die Finger davon und greift eben zum teureren Produkt der "nackten" Festplatte. Diese dafür mit eventuell für Festplatten unzureichender Amazon-Lieferverpackung, damit eventueller Transportschaden, aber dafür mit Seagate-Garantie. Und darf sich dann bei der kostenfreien Garantie-Rücksendeaktion an Seagate erfreuen... ;-)

DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE A PS4. RESEARCH REDDIT AND OTHER FORUMS

It worked for 1-2 weeks then corrupted my psr which no longer turns on past safe mode. It worked perfectly until I used the hard drive. It's FALSE advertising, it is NOT compatible with ps4. Check reddit and playstation forums, I can't even initialize the console to reset it as it malfunctions every time saying "cannot start the ps4". I'm going to have to pay to get it fixed and / or buy a new one. Do your research and AVOID if you are using ps4. So disappointed its ruined my console and I've just bought Christmas presents for other people so I can't even replace it yet. Outraged!!!

Ich habe die Seagate bereits länger beobachtet da ich mit meiner PS4 ein allzu bekanntes Problem habe. Die 500GB Speicher sind unfassbar schnell voll. Auch wenn 500GB viel klingt, wenn ein Spiel allein schon über 100GB belegt (Battlefield 1), dann kommt man nicht wirklich weit. Und selbst mir, als Gelegenheitsspieler reicht der interne Speicher nun nicht mehr aus.

Da die Seagate nun im Angebot war für knapp 90€ habe ich zugeschlagen. Die Festplatte hat sehr handliche Ausmaße (17,6 x 12 x 3,7 cm) und fällt somit kaum neben der PS4 auf. Angeschlossen werden muss sie direkt an der PS4, schließt man sie über einen HUB an, erkennt die PS4 die Festplatte zwar, aber sie verweigert die Formatierung. Das ist leider auch der Nachteil an der PS4 da sie nur zwei USB-Anschlüsse besitzt, somit kommt man an die Anschaffung eines passenden HUBs gar nicht mehr vorbei.

Die Festplatte leuchtet im Betrieb mit einer blauen LED und ist sehr leise, ich höre sie im Spielbetrieb überhaupt nicht.
Wer eine externe Festplatte für seine PS4 sucht kann getrost die Seagate nehmen.
Wenn ich Ihnen mit meiner Rezension geholfen habe, würde ich mich über ein Hilfreich oder einen Kommentar freuen :-)

Update: Nach nunmehr genau 2,5 Jahren läuft die Seagate immer noch wie eine Eins!
