Seachem Purigen is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all other competing products by over 500 percent. Purigen controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen's impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Purigen darkens progressively as it exhausts and is easily renewed by treating with bleach. Purigen is designed for both marine and freshwater use. Comes in 100 ml pack.

Seachem Purigen for Freshwater & Saltwater
Purigen is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Purigen darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with bleach. It is designed for both marine and freshwater use.
Purigen can also be regenerated. As it adsorbs waste products, it will change color from a pale blonde to a dark brown, almost black. Once it is exhausted, it can be regenerated with a solution of bleach and water. The bleach will literally 'burn off' the organics that have been removed from the tank.
Some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigen® and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odor of bleach/chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.
Rinse before use. Use in a fine mesh (180 micron or less) filter bag such as Seachem's The Bag. For best results, Purigen should be placed so as to maximize the flow of water through it. It may be used in a canister filter, media chamber, box filter, or any high flow area of a trickle filter. Each 250 mL treats up to 1,000 L (250 US gallons) for up to six months. Exhaustion is indicated by a pronounced discoloration of the beads to dark brown or black. Regeneration: Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metallic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Use regular 8.25% hypochlorite household bleach (non-scented, no dyes, do not use a splash-less bleach). Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 4 tablespoons of Prime, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well. For freshwater use, soak for 4 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of buffer per cup of water (Discus Buffer, Neutral Regulator). Original color and full activity should now be restored and Purigen is ready for reuse. Caution: some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigen and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odor of bleach/chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.

Now for the caution bit. I was actually considering taking one star off for this because I don't think Seachem make this clear enough unless you do your own research which I did but many don't ! Once finding numerous threads on the internet about two serious issues I wrote to Seachem who have clarified and confirmed so this is straight from Seachem.
Issue no 1 . Many water conditioners that are used today in water changes contain a slime coat element which contains amines. This could render the Purigen useless. To be on the safe side you need to use a water conditioner which does not have this ingredient like Seachem Prime, or remove the Purigen from the filter during water changes for about 24 to 48 hours. To be clear using a water conditioner that contains amines won't create any toxicity but will reduce the effectiveness of it and also saturate it so it is not capable of being recharged.
Issue number 2. If you use a water conditioner containing amines which many do, then if you use this to regenerate your Purigen it will make it toxic and kill your fish. It is hard to know whether or not a water conditioner contains amines one that is safe is Seachem Prime. Amines are not necessarily listed on the ingredients as there are variations of this chemical. I know that the Fluval and Tetra water conditioners are both not safe to regenerate Purigen.
What happens if you try to regenerate your Purigen with one of these water conditioners is a chemical reaction which will trigger highly toxic chloramine in your tank. As I do not intend to reuse or regenerate my Pugin this is not a problem for me but I have switched to using a different water conditioner just to be on the safe side. I really do think that Seachem should make this clear to people purchasing this product as the consequences could be catastrophic.
I will continue to use this product as it seems to really help with water clarity and chemistry but I will be purchasing a new bag when this one runs out. I suggest if you do want to use this product switch to Seachems water conditions also either Prime or Safe to get the most out of it.
No lograba quitar los taninos de un tronco después de curarlo como 10 veces y este paquetito los absorbió todos en menos de 24 horas, ya lleva mas de un mes funcionando y sigo teniendo el agua cristalina.
No te basta? Pues también ayuda a controlar amoniaco. No te basta? Pues también ayuda a controlar nitritos y nitratos. Todavía no? Es renovable simplemente metiéndolo en cloro y queda listo para seguir usando como nuevo. Aún sigues leeyendo? Pfff!
Setup : 200 L tank for a single flowerhorn Internal fluval U4 with standard media, internal UV cannister.
There is a large piece of bogwood in the tank and tannins have been a continual issue for months, despite water changing 25 litres every third day. Carbon made no difference. The water was yellow.
The tank was crystal clear in about 4 hours , quite remarkable.
So far it’s been running about 5 hours and already I can see an improvement. I should also mention that I also dosed the tank with Seachem Pristine, again my first time of using that. I look forwards to seeing how the tank looks tomorrow.
I’ve just ordered a replacement which I’m happy to put away in the cabinet until needed.
So a good product but rather pricey. More comment on the recharging issue would be welcome.
All that being said it has greatly improve the quality and clarity of my water
Fast forward 24 hours and we were shocked...I don't think our tank water has ever been this good - this stuff is magic!
After doing some reading online I saw a lot of recommendations for this product so I thought I'd try it. The results were obvious within hours. Amazing product, all of the tannin was gone by the end of the week. You can regenerate this stuff by taking it out and dosing it with pure thin bleach (no perfumes, no extras, just basic thin). Make sure to read the instructions on the site if you do.
