Absolutely perfect!!! This book was so amazing and I swear this series just keeps getting better and better! I was giddy with excitement to read Meri’s story and I was not disappointed. This book has a wonderful twist from the classic tale and I loved all the characters. Ok well, not all of them because Hahn’s villains are as evil as they come. But her heroes are just as delicious! Brennon and Vasili? Swoon central! >>insert heart eyes and deep sighs<< Even her background characters find their way into your heart. I’m looking at you Howland and Lad. This book was filled with excitement and adventure, laughter and tears, I simply could not get enough. Meri’s story starts as rough as a turbulent sea. But when she finds her true herself, will she finally find smooth sailing?
This storyline began differently than the previous two books and I am glad for change of scenery. While the previous two daughters/sisters were sent to their kingdoms by Lady Eville, Meri left her home tower and began the story "on the run". While protecting her sister Aura from some nasty men who wanted to do some nasty things, Meri unintentionally kills one and feels she must runaway to save her sisters from the villagers wrath. I liked the idea that Meri made this decision on her own and she wasn't blindly following her mother's orders. Actually, Lady Eville was pretty absent from this story due to being with Rosalie and her new baby... Meri was quite on her own and I appreciated that.
In Of Sea and Song Chanda Hahn has taken the story of The Little Mermaid and twisted it all around. Many elements from the original and from the Disney version are there, but it's like she threw everything into one big pot. Then she just reached in and pulled out the next part. And she did it in the most amazing way! The Sea Witch, the mermaid, "Vanessa", the prince, the sisters, are all mixed up. You think you know where one character falls and then she throws something else at you. Not only is it a great story and installment in the Daughters of Eville series, but the twists are captivating. And a certain sister at the end really surprised me by her strength and maturity. Definitely worth reading.
Out of all the mermaid retellings I’ve read, this is my favourite. What a spin on the wedding scene! Meri’s and Brennon’s love story is also so far my favourite out of the daughters of Eville series. I loved Hahn’s fresh take on sirens and mermaids, on how new ley lines are created and on counter-curses as payment - and not for legs. Epic scenes, epic emotions and still heat rating: mild. Totally recommend for lovers of retold fairytales, teen fiction and strong female leads.
I read this on my kindle while camping. I read it in less than 24 hours. It was so good. I love how different each book is but in the same "universe"; how she draws from different versions of the fairy tales; how each sister loves the others so much; how the girls aren't flawless; and how engaging the writing is. I am excited to share it with my teen daughter. I highly recommend this series and the author. (I have read all of her books.) I am excited to read Aura's story later this year.
A storm can be soft and warm. It can also be cold and deadly. Meri and Brennon had both storms. Tumultuous is the simplest word to describe their courtship. Though courtship is a bit of a stretch. Now an old evil is reborn and ready to fight again.
