Nothing is what it first seems
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 August 2016Verified Purchase
Robert Goddard is the absolute master of story-telling. I have read all his other books and the twists and turns are brilliant. My wife is a massive Goddard fan and told me that she read Sea Change years ago. As we didn't have this title I purchased it and read it as soon as it arrived. Like most Goddard books, he weaves historical facts and locations into the story. I loved the way Walpole connived to ensure that political expediency trumped the truth about the "South Sea" scandal.
As in all Goddard stories, nothing is quite what it seems and in this book, you just couldn't trust some of the characters. The double crosses were jaw dropping. I always try to work out what the ending will be in Goddard books but as usual I was hopelessly wrong and of course mislead.
My wife is now going to read Sea Change again because she cannot remember the whole story. Great read. Well done Robert Goddard.

Not one of Roberts best I'm afraid
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 July 2015Verified Purchase
I am a great fan of RGs novels, his stories are so full of twists and turns you never know what the outcome is going to be until the final page. Sea Change is a departure from his usual as this is a recounting of a true story, not fiction. Although the story is told well and it has the same unwilling hero the story just didn't hold me like he usually does. I also felt there was a bit too much flitting back to England on how the trials were progressing. I will look forward to the next all fiction novel!

Goddard's gem
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 November 2012Verified Purchase
This book is typically well researched by Goddard. The story flows with action but for me the really interesting thing was the historical revelations about the events around Britain adopting the Gregorian calendar some years after the rest of Europe.I knew there had been riots because some of the people thought their lives had been shortened because the calendar had changed but I didnt know cotracts between Britain and european countries had two dates and I was facinated to learn why our fiscal year starts on 6th April each year

This story does not pull you in as early as many of Goddard's novels. However, once into the plot it is enthralling. Having a knowledge of the history of the period is an advantage as the setting is all important to the twists and turns of the story. The characters are not well-developed but the events move so quickly this is hardly noticed.
Although I only give it three stars it is still worth reading.

arrived when promised, not quite `as new` as advertised but still in very good condition & certainly worth the saving against buying new.
