This book, however, was a mistake. First, it should be a prequel. Second, the storyline is so rich that it is almost criminal that we were delivered the bedtime story version. I sincerely hope Ms. Cottman rewrites this into a full length novel one day complete with the details of Ewan’s seduction by the wicked sister and his cruel rejection of Caroline. I would hope Caroline would be depicted as something more interesting than a simpering miss willing to run back into Ewan’s arms with aught but a mild pout.
I also wanted a richly depicted villainess. Even if she was evil, there had to be more to her. Her parents loved her to distraction. Something was truly amiss there. Sadly, the poorly developed Lady Beatrice was more compelling than Caroline. I doubt that was the author’s intention. And Ewan just came off as a stupid man who might one day have his head turned again by a seductive female given how easily he abandoned Caroline for a tumble with Beatrice.
I really don’t like Novellas. This was the quintessential example of why that is so.
