An exciting thriller filled with pirates, luxury yachts, murder and mayhem. Successful journalist turned writer Jonno Bligh, high from both an Oscar win and a cocaine addiction, takes to the high seas on his luxury sloop with his childhood friend Cody. They make it as far as Jakarta when Jonno's addiction comes to light and Cody bails. On his own, with only a stray kitten for company, Jonno pushes on, sailing for Singapore.
After a massive storm, in which the sloop is incapacitated, Jonno finds safe harbour on an uninhabited island, and vows to clean up his act and write the next bestseller. His island Idyll is interrupted however when pirates come ashore, and Jonno witnesses the brutal attack of two women. After the pirates leave he is able to go down and rescue one of the women, find the stash of pirate loot, and take off to the high seas again, this time with pirates on his tail. Then it's a cat and mouse game of hiding and trying to outrun the pirates. Will Jonno and his damsel in distress make it to safety in time? Or will the pirates outrun them first?
I did really enjoy this book, reading it in a day. The excitement on the seas in a luxury yacht making a different tack to land based thrillers. I loved the developing relationship between the two main characters, and the tropical island setting, though I did think the pirates were a bit cliched. All in all I found The Scoop to be a very good debut and I will be looking for the next book in the Jonno Bligh series when it comes out. Recommended for all lovers of action and adventure.
