Seriously, I can't express how much I am enjoying this series. The Chronicles of Eorthe is alternate dimension or alternate historical fiction along the line of Harry Turtledove, but filled with Paranormal themes. Which, in my opinion, makes it a thousand times better.
Apparently, way back in history, the black plague didn't just almost kill off most of humanity, it mutated. It turned it host into its mythological counterpart. South Amerigo (S. America) is home to the incubi and cat shifters. North Amerigo is home to wolf shifter tribes. Tribes far north became Yeti. Europa is mostly filled with Vampires, but there are shifters there as well. After the plague hit there was much more confusion and disorder. Eventually the Vampires of Europa get their act together and the progress of history starts back up. So although, everything in this series takes place compatable to modern day earth, because it taking place on Eorthe (alternate earth) the timeline is a couple hundred years or so behind. The vampire have only recently traveled to Amerigo and settled colonies. They use muskets, etc..
When the Vampires got to Amerigo, they successfully carved out a piece for themselves, but they've been unable to make progress farther west. As they face wild shifters who are prepared (after hearing stories of the domestication of the eastern Amerigo shifters and the Incubis to the south. So even though the Vampires have settled the east coast, they can't currently expand west.
This is all backstory of the world of Eorthe. Book 1 and 2 of this series both take place in current time.
Book 1 tells the story of Susan, from our earth, who builds a machine to cross dimensions, which she then blows up. When she next opens her eyes, she's in Eorthe. Through her journey, we meet and see many facets of the various cultures in New Amerigo.
Book 2 tells the story of 2 Eorthe characters from the first book, Kele and Peder, both wolf shifters. In this book we meet new characters and journey along with some old favorites (Lord Benic .. whose story I am greatly looking forward to). We also get to see more reflections of our own past. We journey to New Berg (New York) and see the slave markets filled with captured shifters, etc.., but, nothing is written so that you feel a moral being thrown in your face, it fits the stories situation and mentality of the era.
The further I find myself diving into this world, the more fascinated I become. I love the little details the author includes about the world we are exploring. Seriously, this is an awesome saga. The romance is excellent and it happens amongst a detailed and fascinating storyline. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a paranormal romance not cut from the classic mold. This series is original and very well written. Each story can be read on its own, but I recommend starting with book 1.
