3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings with this one, but I did like Zander and Riley together. 3 August 2014
By Casey M. Britton - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Review for Ramblings From This Chick.

Scarred by Love is the first book that I have read by C.A. Harms, and it is also the first book in her Scarred by Love series. I was really drawn to this one by the blurb and the cover, and couldn't wait to read Riley and Zander's story. I did have some things about this story that didn't work for me, but yet I also had a lot that I really liked as well. I am pretty torn on how to rate this one, which is why I ended up in the middle with 3 stars. I think that a lot of people will really enjoy this story, but I also think that there are others that will have the same problems that I did with the book. I am curious to read more from Harms though, and I am interested to see where she takes this series after this book.

Riley is just getting out of an abusive relationship and has been withdrawn from living her life when her friend convinces her to get out again. Riley has been strong all her life growing up with four brothers, and refuses to let her ex continue to keep her from enjoying herself any more. Riley meets a sexy guy at the party her friend drags her to, but she is instantly convinced that he is giving her cheesy pick-up lines. When she sees him dancing with another girl she thinks that he is also a cheater and wants nothing to do with him. She moves forward and shortly after meets a nice and preppy guy who is far from her typical type of bad boys. Even though Grant is nice and everything she thinks she wants now, she doesn't feel the same chemistry with him as she did with Zander at the party. Soon Riley realizes that appearances can be deceiving though, and she decides to give Zander a chance after finding out that the girl he was with was actually his best friend. Things are going great between Zander and Riley until mistake after mistake is made and Riley ends up feeling as though she is an outsider to Zander's life. Can Zander convince Riley that she is the only one he wants and that he is willing to fight for her before it is too late?

I liked Zander a lot. He was sweet and caring, and wasn't afraid to admit his feelings. He was probably the most forthcoming guy I can remember reading about in a long time. But he did struggle with constantly finding a way to screw things up, and frankly he missed a lot of things that were going on right under his nose. As much as he claimed to love and want Riley, he continued to let his best friend Beth put his relationship with Riley in jeopardy. I felt like he should have been more on Riley's side and seen where she was coming from because she was never unreasonable. I liked Riley a lot. She was strong and not girly at all. I loved that she could dress up and look great, but that she could kick some ass at paintball and video games as well. She was comfortable being herself and having grown up with four brothers made her a cool chick that could go with the flow. But I did feel as though she let Zander get away with a lot and that she gave him way too many chances. She was so forgiving and ended up coming across as a doormat that he could walk all over. I kept waiting for her to just say enough, and it was frustrating that she just let him get away with things so easily. I thought that Zander and Riley had a lot of chemistry together and were building a strong relationship. I thought that their feelings were real and genuine, but I just thought that things kept running hot and cold and after awhile I started to get irritated with them both.

I also have to say that I absolutely hated Zander's friend Beth. She was a complete bitch and interfered far too much in their relationship. The fact that Zander didn't have a clue what was going on and continuously blamed Riley rather than Beth really pissed me off. I felt like Riley deserved more and Beth was really blatant about it. She would do it right in front of Zander and he just didn't really ever seem to get it or do anything about it. I wanted him to man up and drop her despite their history, but it just continued. Then when Riley decided to be the bigger person and fix everything between Zander and Beth after everything that had happened, I really just wanted to shake her. Beth screwed up so bad and honestly didn't even do anything to redeem herself or prove that she was worthy of the effort. I never came around on her character, and honestly it made me think less of both Zander and Riley because of how everything was handled. I am interested to see more of Riley's brother Carson and her best friend Kate though. I think their relationship is intriguing and I would love to get to know both of them better. I do think that Riley and Zander were great together when they were actually together, but I think that outside forces influenced their relationship way too much and far too easily. I hope that in the next book we see them on solid footing and that they have figured out everything between them. I will definitely read the next one to see more of all the characters, and I look forward to seeing what C.A. Harms has in store next.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its a simple but sweet story with great topics 8 June 2014

The story is simple but sweet. I really liked the story. I'm impressed with Harms' handling of Riley's experiences with abuse because it not only portrays the experience of domestic violence but also the aftermaths. It is natural that Riley is cautious of her boyfriend's behavior. She doesn’t want to repeat her past. I have a soft spot for stories about and characters with crappy family members and can relate with Zander's feelings for his father. But more interesting is Zander's relationship with his best friend. I really liked the storyline with their changing friendship and how they have to adjust when Zander falls in love with Riley. My need for multiple storylines to increase the suspense of the story is satisfied. I appreciate the fact that Harms doesn’t exhaust the dramatic potential of the story in the arc of suspense. Other authors would have use Riley's ex or Zander's family to an extent that it would have been ordinary. Harms' arc of suspense stands out with the subtlety. She doesn’t need the dramatic effect to spice up the story.

Unfortunately, Harms' writing style and narration are a little bit too superficial to feel the character's emotions. There is only one scene that got me emotional involved; the rest of the book is just a good read. Harms doesn’t use the potential of emotionality with her descriptions and dialogues. The possibilities are there but serious and important conversations sound too posed and unnatural for me. A more detailed and elaborated writing style would have been better. The story is written in Riley's and Zander's first-person narratives but even the narration can't establish the connection and emotional involvement I need in books to rate them higher. But for all that I enjoyed the book. It wasn’t a waste of my time.

5.0 out of 5 stars C.A. HARMS IS MY HERO !! 2 August 2014

DAMN !! ANOTHER 5 STAR REVIEW !! I am beginning to wonder if CA Harms writes stories just for me !!

This book has some hard to read material right from the start. Domestic abuse is a very serious topic but thankfully in this story Riley is able to escape the hands of her abuser and move on after time to better things. Parker had always been a jerk boyfriend but when you are in an abusive relationship you tend to give many excuses for poor behavior , in his case it was his drinking. Riley has 4 brothers so you can imagine how well it went over when Riley went to 1 brother for help and 2 brothers were there....

With Riley free of Parker she slipped into a shell. Afraid to go out and not wanting to be at school. Upon returning to school she gets an apartment with her bestie Kate. Her brother Carson and Kate finally get Riley out amongst the living. Her first party she encounters a really hot guy Zander , but of course he panics and uses a few lame pick up lines which makes Riley laugh and walk away !! The story is in both Riley and Zander's POV so you assume they will end up crossing paths again. Between Zander's best friend Beth and Riley's new friend Grant drama unfolds and sparks fly.

Riley's brothers approve of Zander but how many times can he screw up before Riley has had enough ?? Zander and Riley are freakin hot !! I loved reading their journey and of course enjoyed all their sex !! Jealousy and insecurities take a toll on this new love. Will they survive all the obstacles they face or will their pasts and present pull them apart ?? Throughout their journey you meet their friends , Beth is not what you think , I was shocked by her behavior. I love Rileys brothers and her family !! I also love Kate and cannot wait to read what comes next for her and that special someone who is extremly hot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CA Harms knows how to add just the right amount of everything to a story to make it flow perfectly and grab my attention. I have read every book out and recently signed on for the tour of book 2 in this series !! I am thrilled !! I find it hard to write my review without just gushing about how much I love the characters and the storyline !!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, I had a hard time walking away ... 12 September 2014

Good book, I had a hard time walking away from it. I would have given it more stars, but the main characters kept getting on my nerves with their 'get back together and then fight about the same thing a couple of days later because nothing ever really gets resolved'. But the writing was great and kept me hooked.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Real Life Romance 29 April 2015
By Monsterella Reviews - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
A true romance, with a definite swoon worthy leading man. This is one to read if your looking for a real life romance with heartache and betrayal and oh so good love scenes.

Riley was hurt by her former boyfriend of two long years, it started out good but about a year and a half into it he started drinking heavy and putting his hands on her in a way no man should ever put their hands on a woman. One night he beat her so bad it looked like she had been in a car accident, the youngest of her four brothers couldn't handle it anymore and took the law into his own hands. After that she became a recluse and rarely left her apartment.

After some time her roommate Kate, who was also her best friend, and her brother, the one who came to her rescue with her ex, decided it was time she got out and lived a little. So they took her to a party where she ran into a very stunning man, Zander. Zander went all googly eyed over Riley from the first time he laid eyes on her, but stumbled over his words when he approached Riley. Riley told him to take his cheesy pick up lines and go, feeling somewhat sorry about it after the fact until she saw him dancing with another woman. Though she would later come to find out the other woman was his best friend Beth. Zander couldn't get Riley out of his mind after that night and Beth spoke to Riley and basically set the two of them up.

There were many instances where Zander and Riley had misunderstandings, causing them to break things off. The two of them knew in their hearts though that the other was the only one they wanted. Life happens, fights happen, but only with true love can one forgive another to get past some of the things that the two of them faced. You will have to read the story to figure out if their love was strong enough to overcome the anguish.
