I was sent a copy of this book through NetGalley and the publishers.
I have not had the pleasure of reading Erica Monroe's books before but after reading this great book that combines a Murder/Mystery with an Historical Romance, I know will be searching out her other books. The Scandalous Widow is the third book in the Gothic Brides series. The Heroine is Lady Jemma Forster/ The Countess of Wolverston who as the story begins has just been made a widow. Her husband Phillip, who is the Duke of Wolverston and his younger brother David have been attacked and robbed in an alley near a Whipping Brothel. Lady Jemma is convinced her husband has been murdered by her brother-in-law David. The Hero, Gabriel Sinclair who is a long time friend of Phillips' has had strong feelings for Lady Jemma. They had, had a brief romantic encounter before she married the late Duke, She is determined to employ Gabriel Sinclair as he is a Bow Street Runner and she is sure he will go the extra mile to investigate the murder of his friend and her husband. The story was a bit predicable but it was a very enjoyable one. I found it a tad difficult to place some of the characters as I had not had the pleasure of reading the first two books in the series. I will be remedy this and hopefully I will get to know these characters especially Lady Jemma's sister. as she was mentioned a few times.
My recommendation is this book could be read as a stand alone, but to enjoy the book more the other books should be read. I will give this books 4 1/2 stars

Really enjoyed it.

Thankfully for the squeamish like myself, that first chapter of the murder scene is by far the most violent. Otherwise, this is more of a mystery/suspense feel, with a Gothic atmosphere. It's a quick, enjoyable read!
