I am really unsure how to rate/review this book. I am a huge fan of these authors and have loved many of their books and re-read them many times. Unfortunately, I feel a bit let down by this book. It was still well written, the characters are interesting and the storyline clever (although it was a bit slow going a lot of the time) the romance was very lacking and kind of cringey IMO.
My biggest issue is that I didn’t like Catalina’s huge crush on Alessandro. She was in love with him when she didn’t know a thing about him. All he had to do was speak in a certain tone of voice or give her a look and she melted. Or her brain melted. Whatever. It just made her seem really young and immature, despite her level-headedness and intelligence in every other area of her life. It seemed like when it came to love - she was a hormonal teenager.
By the end of the book, she had gotten to know him better and had developed some suspicions (never confirmed) that he needed her help. She built everything up in her head with little to no input from him.
I agree with Linus - why is she so fixated on this guy? Out of so many other guys? I just don’t get it. I was annoyed when she had the mini-breakdown at the end about ‘there would never be another for her’, hell girl, you’ve just known this guy for maybe a week and he’s barely told you a single thing about himself. But you are 100% sure that this is your one and only true love. And if you can’t be with him, your life is forever ruined and you are destined to be bitter and alone. Really. 🙄
And then, it just seemed so one-sided. Sure, he hinted that he really liked her and said he was obsessed with her, but again - it seemed like he barely knew her either, so what are those feelings based on? Looks? Infatuation? And then the ending, when she wears her heart on her sleeve and he just brushes it off. Ouch. It did make her look like a bit of a moron.
I know I didn’t love Nevada’s first book but ended up loving the rest of her story, so I still have hopes that this storyline will improve significantly as it goes along. Still, I was disappointed by this read.
