To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Excellent FM reception, below average AM reception. Operation of radio is not intuitive. Only 90 day warranty.
Long version:
I'm using this radio in the SF Bay Area.
Outdoors: FM reception on this radio is its' strength. FM signals come in strong and lock on quickly, without interference from other stations. AM reception is the radios weakness, although the stations lock on quickly, most are faint and hard to hear. This is in a major metropolitan area!
Indoors: FM reception drops to very good, AM reception is poor or non-existent, depending on the building.
The radio is smaller than a deck of cards and feels lighter than the 2 AA batteries that power it. I had no problem turning the radio on, as it came on as I inserted the batteries. When I wanted to turn the radio off, I couldn't figure out how to do it. It turns out that the the band selector button doubles as the power button, although there is no lettering such as "power" on the radio. The enhanced bass feature works well. Owners manual is blissfully short and excellent.
This radio has a 90 day warranty. Sony and panasonic radios have a 1 year warranty.
I bought the "CL" version, the case is clear plastic and you can see the guts of the radio. Very interesting, I'd recommend this for a child so they can see all the parts, including the apparently delicate buttons. I did notice a small button battery that is soldered to the motherboard. I assume this is for power backup for your stations in the memory. Once this battery needs replacement, I hope it doesn't affect the basic operation of the radio, as this battery is not user replaceable. A technician skilled in soldering might be able to replace it, but definitely not the average person.
I used a pair of Panasonic earbuds and Philips headphones to test this radio. With the Philips headphones, some of stations seemed to come in stronger and there was less background "hiss" than with the Panasonic earbuds. Try different headphones & earbuds to see which works best for you.
If you need a FM pocket radio, this is it. If you need an AM radio outdoors, this may work. If you need AM indoors, look for another radio.
Pros: Excellent FM reception Lightweight Excellent owners manual
Cons: AM reception below average Operation of radio is not intuitive / simple No belt clip 90 day warranty
