After his extended hiatus from writing, I was delighted to discover A Sanctuary of Sorts: & Other Stories, a fiction collection by GW Cook. I know Cook to be an excellent author-editor of gothic and psychological horror, so this small volume of literary short stories is an interesting departure. To be fair, the nine stories in this collection still throng with darkness, given that almost all of them deal with death and despair, but there is a certain restraint in the execution, a considered maturity in this quick-fire exploration of the mendacity of suburban life. A Sanctuary of Sorts places a lens on our bleak quotidian, on slights that fester, and lives that have lost their former brilliance, startling us with their relevance. (Triggers for suicide).
