Five star films, of course. The blu-ray transfers here are very good, however I did purchase the Criterion Region A blu-rays of Seven Samurai and Yojimbo because their transfers were better (not a gimme, BFI's blu ray transfer of Rashomon is superior to Criterion's equivalent).
However if you don't have a multi-region player, you will certainly not be disappointed with this package. Thank you, Mr Kurosawa :)
Having just discovered Akira Kurosawa as a director and Toshiro Mifune as an actor, ( having watched Yojimbo for the first time several months ago), I was bowled over to say the least, I then ordered this DVD, as people more in the know than I am , recommended the seven samurai ,A.K directs in proper time and doesn't rush things, which makes it more true to life than nowadays, he must have been good, or else, his idea wouldn't have been pinched to make" The Magnificent Seven" or " Yojimbo" to make " A Fistful of Dollars" and I just love Toshiro Mifune, What an incredible actor, fabulous!! As for people saying some of the dvd's are poor quality, mine were fine, ,although, I wonder if its because I've got an ancient T,V (10 years old) a big old square one, where you can adjust the size, would it make a difference? Anyway, I ordered this, rec'd it earlier than expected , which was great
Really enjoyable films would recommend to anyone wanting to explore cinema from other countries. Kurosawa is one of the world's best directors so good infact that two films in this boxset were later remade for the English speaking market the magnificent seven and a fist full of dollars.
In this collection there are 3 very good films (seven samurai, yohimbo, sanjuro) and 2 poor ones (throne of blood - very dreary, hidden fortress - farcical and unconvincing) . It would be better to buy the good ones separately rather than in this collection.
Excellent value on the set - I paid around 22 pounds for it here. The films are obviously great, though the transfers used on the discs seem to be something of a mixed bag. The Seven Samurai seemed more like an upscaled older scan, and Throne of Blood didn't seem much better. I've been advised that the quality improves the further into the set you get, but probably worth noting the inferior prints here. I'll update the review when I've finished watching all the discs.
So far, I've only watched 'Seven Samurai' and 'Throne of Blood', having seen 'Seven Samurai' several years ago on DVD. Of course (on blu ray), it's that much more enjoyable. I've not seen the other movies before, and, as enjoyable as 'Throne of Blood' was, 'Seven Samurai' is a very hard act to follow! I should have waited a month or so to watch any of the others, after the great masterpiece, 'Seven Samurai'. Still, 'Throne of Blood' was still quite enjoyable- more eerie, a little spooky and unsettling. As far as the other three movies go, they all seem to have great reviews, but I'll wait awhile this time, so I can enjoy watching each one even more!
Quality of yojimbo is atrocious, black bars on the top, bottom, left and right, leaving just a tiny image in the centre of the screen. This is completely unacceptable in this day and age for the amount of money this collection cost. Also a large amount of footage appears to be cut from seven samurai.
