I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.
I felt the book moved along at a good pace and felt for Samantha with all her obstacles that just seemed to keep coming. I loved that her friends stuck by her and supported her. I also felt for Trent as he struggled for his dream hospital. This was the first book by this author but I plan on getting the next book in this series. This was no cliff hanger.
5.0 out of 5 stars Give Samantha a Break 2 May 2015

Samantha' s Secret, the third book in Betty Bolte' s A More Perfect Union series, is the best so far. Bolte is an excellent writer who gives historical details mixed with romance. She writes about strong, daring women and the bewildered men in their lives. Samantha has some real hardships and everything and everyone seems against her in this book. You find yourself just hoping she can catch a break. Trent is arrogant at times but comes through in a big way in the end. It is now time fir Evelyn to find happiness. Can't wait to read Evelyn' s Promise.
5.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary War Romance 22 April 2015

This is my favorite of the A More Perfect Union Series. Samantha meets her match with Trent. It's a conflict of traditional medicine versus modern medicine (modern to the Revolutionary War). Betty transports readers back to a time where fear an uncertainty mingled with the peace and beauty of a New America.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love in a time of war 17 February 2017

Format: Kindle Edition
A melancholic story with a happy ending, Samantha's Secret moved at a fairly slow pace. The book dealt with issues that we face today even though the setting was during the Revolutionary War in about 1790. Decisions made for the sake of expediency generally come back to bite one as many of the citizens of Charles Town found out when they decided to swear allegiance to Britain during the occupation by the British army. When it came time for the return of American rule, those same citizens found themselves losing everything they tried to hold onto, losing the respect of their friends and neighbours into the bargain. The second issue is the one that faces us today, namely the benefits of conventional medicine over traditional practices. Dr Trent Cunningham believes in science, even though the science of the day was deeply flawed. Samantha McAlester takes her healing craft seriously, having observed and studied under her mother as well as from the Indians who saved her life. When Dr Trent and Samantha find themselves treating the same patient, two ideologies clash. In that aspect, the war still rages today between scientific and traditional medicine and it is up to the patient to choose which path they will follow. My own experience is that it doesn't have to be all or nothing.

The story is sad in that Samantha, being the sensitive and caring person that she is, is faced with failure and loss at every turn. She is keeping secrets and when in the interests of honesty and openness, admits to her past experiences she is appalled to find that her friends take a step away from her rather than giving her acceptance. Dr Trent is arrogant and dismissive of her arts, until he realises the effect of his words and recognises her abilities and experiences. Certainly, their joint patient makes both of them realise that they need the skills of the other to succeed.

A well written book, however it did leave me feeling sad. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.
