To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
My Japanese paedagogical hero YOSHIDA Shōin (1830~1859)said that the foundation of confidence lay in pride in one’s home town (or place). Bruce Pascoe’s writing - in essay or short story - glows and sparkles with his love for this beautiful ancient land and people. Especially for its Indigenous peoples. YOSHIDA Shōin felt it most important too that one knew one’s hometown or place - its history, its resources, its products, its beauty, its people - and in every piece in this collection Bruce Pascoe’s love is revealed - his lyrical descriptions, his passion fir all things right and proper - against all bigotry and theft and injustice - makes him easily the wisest man in Australia. If you have read Dark Emu - then you are more than ready for this book. Read it.
Another gem from Bruce Pascoe, following on the heels of the marvellous Dark Emu. Where the latter ought to be mandatory reading for all who dwell on the Australian continent, this collection of essays & stories are the electives that serve up the treats. The writing is lyrical & gorgeous to read. And yet continues to correct our understanding of history & informs even more about the peoples who tended this land for millennia.
The future Australia? It starts here. An encyclopaedic exploration of that country. Where we ignorant colonisers finally learn stuff. A lot of that learning through humour.
Always well researched, eloquently written with a wry and ready humour, Bruce Pascoe informs us of the intellect, philosophy and spirituality of Aboriginal Australians, who command an humanity to which we must aspire.
