Unfortunately this model is now much narrower than previous versions.
I have been wearing xa pro 3d shoes for years for travel, hiking and occasionally running. I picked the 2017 model update and went for my first run. The shoe fits true to length but is now much narrower at around the centre of the shoe (around the arch/instep). I couldn't keep running until i backed the laces right off and removed the insole - even then they felt very squeezy.
The same thing happened to a pair of Wings pro shoes I purchased so it seems that salomon has narrowed it's running shoe line.
I am very disappointed as this was my go-to walking/ travel shoe and also great (if heavy) for trail running. The heel cup is the best in the business and it is still a highly stable shoe for running and walking. The shoe had improved its sole which used to be somewhat slippery but now has a more aggressive softer compound rubber. The lace pocket is also improved. I note that they produce a m+ (wider version) of this shoe which i will now purchase.
Also, a massive thumbs up for Amazon who have agreed to accept a return even though it has been used, based on the model changing without notification of size change.
About the inner elastic loop... I always liked it, but I know quite a few people who wear this exact same shoe and have never been fans... toes catch on it, feels like it right around your foot, etc. To me personally it provided a great bit of support in conjunction with the lacing system.
With the toe cap, it just seems like they wanted to save a little weight and have the front of the shoe to be not as bulky. It still provides a great level of protection and does exactly what the old version did, it's just a bit smaller now.
And lastly, the tread pattern and material. The new pattern is just slightly different, therefore it doesn't really affect the foot feel inside the shoe, a good thing if your foot is acclimated to the shoe type already. The new material does a remarkably better job on wet surfaces than the last iterations. My experience is with polished concrete and shop floors, so take that in mind.
Overall I'm really pleased with the new product. Some reviews bring up the idea that they seem more narrow than the last, but I didn't seem to notice. Of course due to packaging, they come slightly molded inward, but just after a few times wearing them, they feel exactly like slipping into the past 4 pairs that I've owned.
The XA Pro 3D has a stable and secure base, with a higher than average arch support, not found in many trail running shoes. Because these shoes are so stable and stiff, they are great for hiking and backpacking, but not so great for trail running. The durability and quality are very solid on the XA Pro 3D. I was able to get around 400 miles on two separate pairs of the previous version. This new version is looking to be equally durable.
