Sahara: A Journey of Love, Loss and Survival Kindle Edition
Having walked more than 5000 kilometres from Trafalgar Square to Morocco, Paula Constant finds herself at the westernmost edge of the Sahara Desert - and the brink of sanity. The wheels have fallen off her marriage and her funds are quickly drying up, but she is determined to complete the second stage: walking through the romantic Big Empty of Northern Africa to Cairo. Sahara is the story of Paula's struggle to overcome her innermost demons and take control of her journey, her camels and the men she hires to guide her through one of planet's most extreme regions. Illness, landmines and political red tape stand between Paula and the realisation of a life's dream. Sahara is a thrilling adventure and a story of joy, heartache, inspiration and despair. But, above all, it's a celebration of the human spirit in all its guises.

About the author

Between 2004-2007, Paula Constant walked over 12000km through eight countries, including over 7000km through the Sahara with her own camel train and only local nomadic support.
Her first two books, Sahara and Slow Journey South, detail the journey and were published by Random House.
The walk deepened a lifelong ambition to write high quality, epic historical fiction. Paula moved to Granada in Spain, where she spent several years researching the collapse of Visigothic Spain and the rise of Arabic Al Andalus. Her research inspired the Visigoths of Spain series of historical fiction novels, and more research than she had imagined possible.
She spent the next few years writing the series in the early hours of the morning, whilst also working full time in mining as a fly in, fly out worker on remote sites in northern Australia. Originally from Mansfield in Victoria, Australia, Paula divides her time now between Broome, in North Western Australia, and Granada, Spain.
She adores, in no particular order, her awesome stepchildren, Chloe and Taylor; walking on Cable Beach under a full moon; great gin; camels; singing the pina colada song at inappropriate moments; and soppy romance novels of all persuasions.

- Reviewed in Australia on 30 June 2018This is a book which can be read as the second part of Paula's journey, following on from the first book on her walking journey 'Slow Journey South'. I love accounts of travel experiences especially challenging ones and this account has the added bonus of taking us to a place rarely explored by foot and, possibly never before, by a single 'white' female. I'm gob smacked at her persistence and dogged determination. The descriptions of place are simple yet sufficient. The recounting of the relationships she forms with her hired guides and her camels is certainly a major part of her story and proves to be very interesting, amusing and moving. If only it included photos of her journey, then I would give it five stars. Paula is one helluva woman.
- Reviewed in Australia on 1 February 2023Verified PurchaseWhat an amazing story from such an incredible woman. Written with such depth of inner feelings and emotion. The courage shown is an inspiration to everyone who reads this. I was so afraid for Paula in parts and so impressed by her intestinal fortitude in others. Thoroughly recommend this book! Now to go back and read some more of Paula's books.
- Reviewed in Australia on 15 January 2022Verified PurchaseI have read both books and have been captivated. The books have described the rawness of the Sahara in detail, in a way that many of us couldn’t comprehend, hope at sometime you can get back and finish what you started.
Shame about the camels let’s hope they found an owner like yourself.

- Reviewed in Australia on 4 February 2021Verified PurchaseThis is an almost unbelievable story of determination and real grit. There is however a lot of emotional self analysis which I would have been happy without being a fan of straight and true adventure. Having said that this story may have not been as rounded and authentic without it.
- Reviewed in Australia on 10 April 2017Verified PurchaseI read this book following Paula's interviews with Richard Fiedler on ABC radio and her first book "Slow Journey South". All revealed a remarkable woman; intelligent, well spoken, interesting and above all else courageous. Any young woman who reads this book could not but be inspired to take on any challenge. Literature critics might challenge pace and relevance in places however the story is well worth the read. "Slow Journey South" sets the scene and should be read first.

Verified PurchaseThis is my kind of book. I love true accounts of exploration, discovery, and survival---and this book didn't disappoint. Paula is a very good writer and a very good observer of humanity. Also very eye-opening account of what the world is like deep inside that huge and mysterious continent called Africa. Highly recommend.

Verified PurchaseA thoroughly fascinating book that makes the people and surrounds of Sahara come alive. Even if walking in the desert is not your cup of tea - it will be after reading Ms Constant's memoir of her most remarkable journey.

Verified PurchaseA wonderful book about an incredible journey! Paula is a great writer. She makes you feel as though you are there on her journey with her. I laughed, cried, and felt her frustration as she walked the thousands of km her way through the Sahara. She is an inspiration, and this book is a must read!
kay IrwinReviewed in the United States on 3 July 20135.0 out of 5 stars Setting yourself a challenge
Verified PurchaseAn amazing report of an Australian woman setting herself the challenge of walking across the Sahara from West to East and learning all of the skills required to pack and handle camels and, most of all, to pick guides.
