Product Description

The third book in the beloved #1 bestselling author's sexy, romantic suspense Slow Burn series…

They say young love doesn't last, but a girl from the wrong side of the tracks with unique abilities and the hometown golden boy were determined to defy the odds. For Zack Covington, Anna-Grace—his "Gracie"—was the one. Until one night forever alters the course of their future, when a devastated Gracie disappears without a trace, leaving Zack to agonize over what happened to the girl he loved. As the years pass, his desperate efforts to find her uncovered nothing.

Now working for Devereaux Security, he stumbles across a painting featuring a special place only he and Gracie would know. The image is too perfectly rendered for it to be coincidence. His Gracie must be alive. When he finally tracks her down, he is shocked—and heart-broken—to discover the wounded shell of the girl he once knew and still loves. Her psychic gifts are gone, and worse, she believes he betrayed her all those years ago.

Zack has enemies, and once his weakness is discovered, Gracie becomes a target for revenge. He'll have to save her before he can earn her trust and her love. And he vows they'll never be torn apart again.

This review is based on an eARC from Sullivan & Partners for an honest review.

I am a huge fan of Maya Banks and had the pleasure of having High Tea with her when she visited Australia last December. Ms Banks is such a lovely, down to earth person and of course her books are just fabulous. I have read some of her Sweet series, which are awesome and this is the first I’ve read of the Slow Burn series. Not having read books 1 or 2 didn’t make any difference for me and the prose is wonderful, so easy to read as the story unfolds before your eyes.

Zack Covington is thirty-two years old and is tired of having his past invade his thoughts at every waking moment. Zack is determined to move on from the disappearance of his love, his whole world, Gracie twelve years ago. When she just up and disappeared without a word, Zack has been fraught with heartache ever since, never knowing if she was dead or alive. Working with Devereaux Security Services (DSS), Zack had hoped it would help him discover the truth about her, but nothing has turned up. Now he’s going to put it behind him, be happy and live in the present.

Fate has another path for him it would seem. Only two days after his promise to himself, a job comes up at an art gallery. Meeting with the client, a painting comes into view and Zack almost blacks out, the scene is one of a personal nature that only he and another know of, his Gracie. She’s alive?

Anna-Grace is been living in fear and in hiding for the last twelve years. She hasn’t faced her past and wants to keep running when Zack appears in the gallery. Everything from that night comes back to hit her full force. She is utterly terrified of Zack and beyond hurt from his betrayal that broke her heart and body.

Firstly let me start by saying that I am a huge Maya Banks fan. I have all of her books and will continue to order her books.
I loved this story. I loved the characters Zach and Gracie. I love all the other characters in the story and I am looking forward to reading the stories of the other characters in the Slow Burn novels to come.

Zach and Gracie were childhood sweethearts. After a terrible incident Gracie flees and Zach spends the next 12 years looking for her and agonizing over what has happened to her. They finally meet up again, entirely by accident, and then begins their journey of putting back the pieces of their relationship.

So if I loved it so much why did I only give it 3 stars? Well in my opinion the 1st 30% of the book was fantastic and the last 30% of the book was exciting but the middle 40% was boring. Nothing much happened. They just talked about their feelings. Over and over again. And not even to each other most of the time. It was just in their head. I don't mind talking about their feelings. But it was very repetitive. I found myself skimming some pages cause I just didn't want to read again the same thing over an over. I would have preferred the book be shorter and kept my attention the entire way through.

I read this on paperback. A lot of the scenes and dialogue was repetitive. The heroine (after the third scene of the same reaction) was really stupid to not pick up that things were not adding up. The author dragged this scene from 1% to 60% of the book😠.
Now that doesn't leave any room for proper character development at all. Buy at this stage, I felt the book wasn't worth anymore of my time.

It was mentioned several times how shy the heroine was. A lot more mention of the same plan over and over again from the hero. Dreams of marriage etc..... I mean we got it the first time, ok? I guess the author was trying to fill out the pages.

Yes it had the alpha hero, the plot was good but execution????

2.0 out of 5 stars Banks Safe at last didn't happen until the very end. :-( 24 January 2017

This is the story of second chances romance & find & lost

This book tells the story of a second chance romance with the found lost love of Zack Covington and Anna Grace Hill (Gracie). Zach works for DSS Security Co. In Houston ,Texas where he & his coworkers go to a job site for their business and in walks Gracie, an artist Zack hasn't seen in twelve years. He was madly in love with her and she just up and disappears for twelve years.
When she sees him she is very afraid of him and Zack doesn't know why?
As it turns out she was raped by three of his true Davis from high school and led to believe he set it up to get rid of her , and that is what happened.
Through 74% of the book there is recycling information about what happened and how Gracie feels. She's angry, depressed.,helpless, hysterical, narrow minded, constantly crying, self centered, bitter, cynical, very withdrawn and is pretty and an artist. A tiring read uh!
Finally at about 81% through the book she has a gift of reading people's thoughts and minds restored to her and becomes part of the DSS Security team and uses her "gift" to find a fellow kidnapped member. At the very end Zack & she marry & are happy ever after.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly Disappointed! 29 June 2015
By Monique Mystique - Published on Amazon.com

I have been a Maya fan for years and have always loved her work. There are NO excuses for how terrible this book was though. It was one of those books where the author tells you how they feel rather than using good writing to show you how they felt. A very weak backstory was given with a conflict that could have been resolved with a single conversation.

But nooooo. There was no conversation between the hero or the heroine until the 60% mark of the novel. SIXTY PERCENT! For 60 long percentages we had to suffer through whining and second guesses inside both of their heads pondering what the other one could have possibly thought rather than actually talk to each other...much less establish a romantic connection between the two characters.

After they finally had the big discussion that cleared everything up in a SINGLE CONVERSATION at the 60th% mark, the hero left his supposed love interest sitting until the 88% mark when he FINALLY reappeared. They did not even have their first "on screen kiss" until the 90th percent point in the book! Correct me if I am wrong but I thought this was a romance? Where was the romance? There was way more coverage and emphasis of the GANG RAPE than there was for the romance between Zack and Gracie.

Over all it felt like two insipid whining characters misunderstanding each other through the entire book with most of the focus on secondary characters and their plots.

No bueno Maya. ''

1.0 out of 5 stars Wish I could return 11 July 2015

I will no longer automatically buy Maya Banks' books. By the second chapter I was already skimming and continued to skim just to find out the "big secret", hoping it would justify all the drama and angst. When I finally found it at about 45%, it DID NOT. I stopped reading and tried to return it, but I'd had it too long. I will not finish it even though I'm stuck with it.
I read at least 4 books/week and have finished a lot of far fetched stories, but this was just ridiculous and frankly disturbing. As I said, I DNF but what I did read will haunt me.
2.0 out of 5 stars Yawn. NOT what we expect from this author 27 March 2017

Yawn. This one is Zack's. We don't really find out why he (and not Dane) is Beau Devereaux's "go to" guy. Might be nice to have some backstory. You might recall that Zack has been acting oddly in the earlier books. Mr. Sensitive, etc., about finding Ari. Some of that comes through here. Old girlfriend, traumatic breakup/non-breakup, no closure, etc. Pretty obvious early on who is behind Zack's heartache. Eventually the author spends a couple of pages on the reveal. Almost a non-event at that point. It took much whining and self-flagellation to get there. And throughout the book they're trying to tie up the loose ends from Ari's past. But really, who cares? Nothing compelling about the story. In fact, I found myself skipping whole chunks of pointless dialog to get to whatever point the characters would eventually get to.

I love this series. This is book 3 it is Zach & Gracie's story. It starts with Zach forever looking for Gracie who disappeared 12 years ago and Gracie believing Zach had betrayed her and wanted to get rid of her. Zach walks into an Art Gallery and comes face to face with Gracie. He is deliriously happy and Gracie is terrified. The rest of the book is their story and how they find their way back to each other. It ends with a heavy sigh inducing happily ever after. Definite re-reading!!! The author is amazing!!!! She writes intense love stories in the midst of terrifying situations. Her books are edge of your seat good!!
