I really enjoyed reading this book of short stories. Some of the stories are quite moving and deal with important issues. Many of the stories are moving. The book presents them in a way that makes it hard not to empathise with issues faced by many tg people. Not Bleak was a particular highlight of the book for me.
I really loved it, the first story "Other Women" was my favorite. Most of the stories gave me an idea of what my life could have been like, if my personality wasn't so damaged and if I had come out in my early 20's. One story "Portland Oregon" had a little bit of a fantasy element to it. The woman in the story had a pet cat that she talked to and it (Glenn) talked back to her. In fact most of the story is told from the cats perspective. The book needed better proof reading, there were a few points that were awkward to try and read.
How is this a "diverse" collection of stories when every character is the same trans woman with the same hobbies wearing the same clothes living in the same area having the same problems, drinking heavily and smoking a lot of weed?
This is of course a real and valid experience many trans women have, my issue is with what I expected based on the description vs what it actually was. Just don't claim a diverse POV then deliver the same character but with a different name in 9 out of the 11 stories in a collection
Nice little short story collection from mostly the pov of younger trans women, of a refreshing variety. Though i guess they almost all are kinda nerdy. I can relate! A great knack for memorable characters quickly drawn, and crisp real sounding dialogue. Of course some stories, i liked more than otthers. Especially the talking kitty one.
