SICKER is the second book to a 3-Book psychological suspense novella surrounding a woman with a very sick husband. Upon the close of Book One, Susan Branch has just discovered the truth concerning her husband’s constant illnesses and this is where we pick up. Illnesses that left her void of a happy marital life and sense of self. Illnesses that can be said to have betrayed the most intimate part of her: her mind. Illnesses that were the result of a sick individual that literally robbed her of what could have been.

John’s secret (which you’d have to read Book One to discover) is so bizarre that Susan is caught up in a wrath that consumes her and she is forced to question her own sanity. How could she, as a medical professional, miss so many of the signs that revealed the true nature of her husband’s illness? An illness that is far more superior than that of physical bruises.

SICKER focuses on the source of John’s obsession as he recounts a childhood that is riddled with sadness, loneliness, and trauma.

While my first impression was mental retardation from the first book, reading this one I feel differently. As crazy as this sounds, I almost feel sorry for John. You see, this book made me think about the importance of love in our lives. I believe the need to feel loved and to be loved is critical to our operation as well balanced and healthy individuals. People denied the privilege of this become the same people we deem crazy in mental institutions. Truth is, it doesn’t matter whether you grew up with a silver spoon in your mouth or plastic spoon, everyone everywhere at some point in their lives needs love, without which we are no longer human beings and can, therefore, be driven to do unspeakable things.

I read the book soon after buying it, though I often wait to do that with fiction ebooks, never getting to many of them I purchase, but in this case, I was drawn to see what that vivid, vivacious author was up to next in this psychological suspense series. I was reminded all through of many books within classic Russian literature like some books by Dostoevsky like The Idiot and particularly Oblomav by Ivan Goncharov. There's a similar intensity of relentless laser-like focus looking further and further into the protagonist's eccentric damage: there's also an antiquated feel from the amount of expository prose that's risky, but which I feel works here, making getting to the heart of the information without dillydallying.

I found myself shocked by revelations at the end, horrified by what the wife was required to put up with all through, yet also sympathetic to the very sick husband. Understanding his backstory was good at creating empathy, which is the a major reason for why people read, to be able to imagine how other people come to their behavior because of how what happened to them in their past. I care about this series and am looking forward to the next one!
5.0 out of 5 stars An Addictive Series 8 June 2016

Sicker continues the story of John Branch and his wife Suze. Though this is essentially the second book in the series, the novel is presented largely as John's confessional to his wife immediately following the events of the first novel.

The second installment was a bit slower than the first book since it primarily is constructed around a back story. It doesn't have the sense of suspense and immediacy that the first book had, but it is still a compelling tale that keeps the pages turning until the end. If you read the first story, you will likely be craving the answers and history included in book two.

The writing style and storytelling are exceptional, and there are a lot of layers to the story. Christa Wojo does a masterful job of creating disturbed characters that are remarkably human. Truly a thoughtful, enjoyable read that most readers will enjoy. Can't wait to see what happens in book three.

A striking look at how environment and biology can dictate mental illness, the story of John Branch absolutely mesmerizes. Christa Wojo has spun such a fantastic tale from the first person perspective of a diseased mind that I was completely glued to each page savoring each jarring revelation. Normally unnerved with cliffhangers - wrap it up already!, I'm glad a third novella is forthcoming to thoroughly enjoy the conclusion of this unusual saga by the author's top notch writing that lures you directly into the scene itself; I'm impressed!

SICKER is dark, depressing, disturbing, but awesome. I can't really explain. Very interesting. Very intriguing. Can't wait for the next one.
