Bill Callahan is back from the pasture with a flock of new tunes for the first time in six years. His roving humanism, looking forward and back at the mythos of everyday life with a hypnotic mixture of wry detachment and deep soul, is just the tonic for all of us starved for words from an old friend. The music is lovely dreamlike Americana stripped to the bone, grabbing moments of life from thin air, as only Bill Callahan can.

Lots of short narrative songs less than 3 minutes about his life at the moment, some of them fairly banal. Lots of nice little one liners that make me smile, and with his slow laid back delivery, you tend to think still waters run deep, and there is a significant meaning to delve into and uncover. Sometimes that maybe true, however, at other times he has trite shallow thoughts with some mumbo jumbo claptrap on religion and god.
It is a unique style he has, quite unlike anyone else around, very chilled. I am only familiar with a couple of his earlier albums, "Sometimes I Wish I Were an Eagle", and "Dream River", and this is in a similar vein. It is more acoustic and mellow than some of his previous material, and overall he seems very content with his life, taking a satisfied mature take on things. But the quirky lyrics and odd thoughts and strange observations keep emerging to entertain and enthral, as this rambling collection unfolds. Having listened to it half a dozen times now, it has grown on me, with different nuances revealed on each play. Well worth delving into and highly recommended.
