UPDATED: We've had this since August and it's now early January. The carpet has been shredded but I wrapped some sisal small rugs around them as they like to climb onto the different platforms and grab/bunny kick the poles (great fun!). With their rugged play the platforms have loosened up and when they launch off to a nearby counter, the platform is pushed back as they leap and it actually causes them to fall short of the counter landing on the edge on their stomachs. So, I have yet to try to tighten them (not sure if possible) but just wanted to pass it along that this could happen. I did buy two and have not put the second one up but when I do, I'll put it up against a wall so this won't be an issue. I won't buy them again unless they were wrapped with rope. Even real carpet would be better but this isn't.
My ceiling is a couple inches shorter than standard, but even then we just sawed off 2" off the PVC insert and it worked perfectly. Aside from our edits, it is as easy to put up as a tension shower rod.
We do have this directly against a wall, I am not sure if the sturdiness would be okay without it. When he jumps hard enough it does shift, but it stays in place and no sign of it actually moving. It is great against the wall though, floor space taken up is 1/3rd of even the smallest cat threes.
Another bonus, that probably doesn't apply to everyone - it blends in very nicely to our apartment's ugly "manilla" walls. It is much less obtrusive in size and appearance than other cat trees.
