Product description

Product Description

On her penultimate day at University, Kassandra Winters inadvertently overheard herself described as “…too shy, too plain, a bit ungainly if you must know and rather on the plump side, not at all what’s needed for such things…Kassandra would be far more suited to a job in an archive office...” Worse still she was subsequently knocked flying by the exceedingly tall and drop-dead gorgeous man to whom this description had been delivered. Adding insult to injury she ran into the same man the next afternoon and, justifiably upset by what she had heard, refused to indulge his somewhat perplexing determination to engage her in the oddest conversation and gave him short shrift.
Fast-forward two years and contrary to expectations, Kassie is not hidden away in an archive office. She is in Rome; employed by one of that city’s famous International Schools, as well as a tourist agency. One day, while escorting a group of visitors around the ancient Roman port of Ostia, she bumps into the same man — the man whose seemingly random remarks still puzzle her — and he introduces himself as Gabriel St Germain. This unexpected encounter leads to a job offer, the role of assistant tour guide for a three-week tour of ancient sites in and around Rome. Unable to resist such an opportunity, and against her better judgement, Kassie agrees.
Kassie has intrigued Gabriel St Germain since he ran into her, literally, outside her professor’s office. Despite her rushing off the following day, giving him no chance to apologise for what she had heard, Kassie left a lasting impression and her face haunts his dreams. Never expecting to see her again, Gabriel is astounded when she appears right in front of him — as though destined to do so — in the middle of a ruin and, resolved not to lose her a second time, he concocts a plan to win her heart.
Gabriel’s old-fashioned courtship touches something deep inside Kassie and, although struggling to believe that someone as handsome as Gabriel could possibly be interested in her, she soon realises she has fallen irrevocably in love with him. It seems he returns her feelings and for a brief moment, Kassie allows herself to trust that they have a chance at a happily ever after. However, just as Kassie shares everything of herself with Gabriel, her world comes crashing down and those callous words uttered that fateful day return to torment her. Can Gabriel save their romance or will it fall in ruins, like the relics of antiquity that brought them together.

What’s not to love about this novel? It’s a story about finding love in the most unexpected place, when you least expect it. The author takes the reader on a guided tour of Roman ruins with Kassandra (Kassie) Winters, as the tour guide and Gabriel St. German as the gentleman in hot pursuit.

I like the chemistry between the two main characters and the slight insecurities that Kassie felt about herself, which cause her to doubt Gabriel’s interest in her. She is so driven by such insecurities, she falls into a well-laid trap that we are sometimes vulnerable to when plagued by such demons. In her weakness she is almost killed trying to run away from Gabriel and her love for him. It was great that Gabriel didn't give up so easily. And in the end, love conquers all. Brilliantly written!

WOW! Rosie Chapel has done it again! I love to travel and when I picked up this book, I looked forward to a trip to Rome. Rosie did not disappoint. She managed to make me feel like I was there. You can really tell that she knows her Roman history and sites well, because the rich language she uses transports you to Rome. I have added quite a few new landmarks to my future trip!

Okay, now for the plot. I love that this story is about more than love, but also self-discovery. Kassie is like so many women who are insecure about their looks. When she and Gabriel begin their dance, you can really see how her self-esteem drives her. Rosie did a fantastic job bringing you into Kassie's shoes. It is only through Gabriel's love that she is able to truly see her own worth. However, that is not completely true. Gabriel helped her see it, but it was her own rebuilding of her inner strength that made it possible. To me, it made the story all the richer that she was a stronger woman, not because of a man's love, but because of her own love for herself.

This book is wonderful for people who LOVE love, history, and travel. Rosie manages to weave all of them together in a rich story that will leave you asking for more! I will certainly be reading more of Rosie Chapel! Rosie, what about Venice or Florence next?!
5.0 out of 5 stars Adventurous Romance. Loved it! 29 April 2017

I loved everything about this novel. From the fun adventures to the sizzling sexual tension, this dynamic novel had me in its clutches, and I greatly enjoyed reading it. The imagery in the book is really well done, and it painted the beautiful backdrop and settings of Rome spectacularly.

The story had a lot of different and interesting locations, and it was never stagnant. It’s a genuinely enjoyable novel, excellently crafted.
Kassandra (“Kassie”) Winters is an enigmatic young woman who works as a tour guide in Rome. Gabriel St. German is a loveable rogue who keeps crossing paths with her, until their destinies intertwine and he ends up hiring her as an assistant tour guide to ancient sites in and around Rome.

The chemistry between them is palpable – charged and flirty, and while it keeps you involved and highly interested, it’s tasteful enough while still being romantic, but not trashy, which is a rarity these days! Gabriel is a gentleman, and it was a refreshing change of pace to read. Beneath the romance, there’s a nice underlying theme about how relationships can be a lot like ruins, precious antiques that toe the line between being priceless or mistaken for invaluable relics.

The story was continually interesting and engaging, with a kind of “The Mummy” vibe to it (the earlier movie in the nineties, not the newer one). The quasi-witty banter and romantically charged dynamic between Kassie and Gabriel really held my interest throughout the book, and I LOVED the ending (no spoilers!). There are some very funny lines, and then moments when you almost need to fan yourself! The author did a great job at weaving together a solid plot with a clean writing, and I’d highly recommend this book.
