While the world in which they rule is dark, this book is anything but, thanks to its cheeky heroine, Sammy Sage, an eager-to-please dress designer who agrees to assist with a Badd family wedding, and whose wry, sometimes crass banter had me laughing out loud from the moment we meet her. Little does she know that helping the Badds will trigger a series of unexpected events, and they had me giggling, then agog, and always frantically flipping to the next page. After an attack in her apartment forces Sammy to hide out at the Badd estate, and as a few steamy trysts between Sammy and Kain turn into something deeper, their budding relationship becomes just as riveting as the mysterious circumstances that have put Sammy’s life in danger. Just who are the Badds? Can Sammy trust them? Why is she a target?
That’s what I love about this book. It’s not often you come across a story that can weave together high-stakes romance with full-throttle suspense and never lose its sense of humour, but Royally Bad manages to be sexy, propulsive and witty all at once. Consider it a crowning achievement.
