Creating a new production of “Il Barbieri” is never an easy task even with the amazing rhythms and melodies Rossini gave us. Making the plot relevant is even more difficult. Beaumarchais play is a strong critic of society of his time, of class abuse and other social maladies. Annabel Arden, the director, brings it to modern times and, to no surprise, if fits perfectly. Social issues change in their form, but not in their essence, so we can easily relate to them and have a good lough at it too. This Glyndebourne production is fresh, very easy to follow and easy to relate to. The singers/actors are mostly young and full of vitality. Corbelli is a wonderful Don Bartolo. The role fits him like a glove!
Musically all singers are a delight to hear and see. The orchestra sounds great under conductor Mazzola, keeping Rossini’s music flowing. The funny non-musical additions keep the mood light balancing them with the more dramatic scenes. The sound and image recording are great as expected on a Blu-Ray disc. Strongly recommended.
