If you look at the “Date Started” and “Date Finished,” you can tell I enjoyed the book. :-). I started it late at night on the 13th and couldn’t read long before falling asleep, but the next 1.5 days, I couldn’t put it down.
If I had one small gripe, it’s that the format is a little too much like the formulas of the original Tom Clancy novels: it starts out very disjointed, with many different characters and seemingly disconnected story lines. At times, you wonder to yourself, “How the heck is this all going to pull together?” But it’s truly a very small gripe, as each small storyline is compelling on its own, and every time it seems one of them is about to reveal something bigger, Thompson jumps you to a different one, so you’re left craving more. Knowing how he pulled it all together in a thoroughly surprising denouement in Book 1, I was fully anticipating something similar. Wow - Thompson didn’t disappoint! No spoilers from me, I promise, but the ending was a huge surprise! How Thompson comes up with all this, I have no idea, but his creativity and writing are simply marvelous. The ending lays the foundation for Book 3 of the trilogy, which is coming out this fall. Waiting is going to be torture! How will he resolve this conflict!?!?!?!
