Kath lives in a poor Boston suburb with her father and brother, who possess an archaic attitude towards gender roles and treat her as a live-in housemaid. One day a surprise visit from an old friend leads her to step out and question her life’s priorities, especially after a visit to church reminds her of Christianity’s warmth. A desire to find her way out of misery draws her, inspired by her new priest, John Davey, with whom she strikes up a friendship, but the duty to family stands in the way. Kath has to decide whether pursuing her life’s happiness or looking after her family is what her mother would have wanted while being unsure what to do with her growing affections for Priest John Davey. Little does she know that far more is at stake and a bitter clique has formed in an attempt to chase Davey out of his new parish.
