Another excellent yarn from an author who really knows how to tell a story. Centred around the rescue of a troubled child it is just gripping. I especially like the parallels between the grieving toddler child and her rather sad illegitimate carer Wilhelmina. The two outsiders bond together against an unforgiving world.
Wilhelmina disapproves of her flirty employer/fake fiancé Lord Deveril who lounges around the house being handsome and muscular but clueless about managing his family problems. This being a Chasity Bowlin novel there are also a few complex villains intent on doing evil.
This is classy HR. The characters have interesting depths, the plot unfolds step by step and each chapter adds to the mounting tension. I like that the child character is not at all saccharine and that Wilhelmina holds her own against the charming Lord Deveril. Highly recommended reading.
